I was mooching around my local Plenty Cheapness emporium when
This 'thing' caught my eye and I found no labels or stickers to
give me a clue as to what the hell it's for.

You can pull the loop back to the red handle and release it to get
a mild 'thump' so presumeably a spring loaded piston hits the alloy end cap.
No holes in it anywhere so it doesn't/can't puff or suck anything

So, what's it for?

I'm going to kick myself. I've seen them before, and somewhere in the back of my mind I think it's something like a mole scarer (but it's not that).

Bah.

My best guess: it's a percussion instrument.
My second best guess: it's a fidget toy.

Musical instruments, Toys, then anal probes
Good old BCF, always striving to attain the lowest depths of depravity
Laughing
It was in the tool section BTW if that helps
(anal probes, vaseline, nipple clamps, BDSM gear etc was in the
kitchen and bathroom aisle).

I keep wondering in what circumstances would you want/need to apply a somewhat mild percussive force?

flatten lumps in wallpaper? mmm nah

Cow-in-a-can/ moo-maker? (Faulty.)

What happens if you pump it multiple times? It looks like the black (rubber?) canister might swell and plug whatever it's shoved into. Shocked What's the diameter?

Buy one, read the description on the receipt. Very Happy

You need to go on reddit or somewhere, and confidently state that it's a [insert made up tool name here].

Because people are always more keen to correct other people's errors than actually answer a question. Thumbs UpSmile

Wish it was a moo maker I loves moo makers me.

It's a solid polypropolene-ish body so won't expand
but you got me thinking it is about 4" in diameter so maybe its a soundmaker
type thing to see if a sewage pipe's blocked with turds?
Loud no turds, quiet lots of turds sorta thing.

phuctyfino
I may have to drop into the shop tomoz and just ask the feckers what it is
cos it'll bug me if i dont.

Just had a cunning plan/theory!
What if the 'piston' is magnetic?
and its a magnetic nail, screw picker upper?
the alloy end plate would drop them after the mag piston thingy
is retracted

snag with that idea is, it would be magnetic at times you may not want it to be.

Sod it I'm deffo going back tomorrow

You guys have finally got there. It is a tool for picking up machists swarf , dropped nuts and bolts / nails etc. The plunger is pressed down to pick up and then retracted , when the magnet moves away from the base and the steel items drop off. I'll just point out that steel swarf from lathes etc can be extreemly sharp, like a continuous springy razor blade. My mate has one .
