|
|
Wife's got a 2006 CBF500, which has been well used over the years and is now up to 65k. This morning starter motor decided to not turn over. Ignition on, choke out, press starter button, nowt, no cranking at all. Gave it a couple of bashes with a bit of wood and it freed up, and started the bike instantly. It did this once before several months ago, hence knew plan of action. Was a spot cooler this morning, dunno if related. But having done it again today, I'm starting to wonder about the reliability of this motor now.
How common is such behaviour for a starter motor?
Is it the sort of thing where it'll just do this once in a while and I'm best just putting up with it.
Or is this a symptom of dying starter motor that'll likely leave my wife stranded somewhere on a cold day? ____________________ Beginner Biker Adventures Blog

Might even be carbon debris blocking the commutator. Try bumping it backwards slightly in gear instead if hitting it next time, that'll move it round a bit. Solution is the same though. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

Cool, sounds like I'll be stripping it down at the weekend to take a closer look. Probably worth picking up some replacement brushes to slap in whilst I'm doing the job.
Anyone know what bits I'm likely to need / should replace anyway?
Brushes? Two yes? Both same? Worth replacing brush holder ring bit?
Of course, I could pull it apart, inspect it and see what I need, but my wife's using bike every day for work, so don't fancy taking it off road for long. ____________________ Beginner Biker Adventures Blog
