It is time to restore this old lady into a working condition. It is an old bike my father used to ride back in 1960-1970 and finally it rests from 1979. My father filled oil into cylinder through spark hole. Bike stayed in garage all those years. It was left in running condition.

As i will try to do all the job by myself, it gonna take a longer time. I will posting here as progress goes on and try to get help from you if/when get stuck. Smile Hope i will get it.

Week 1

It should look like this when finished.

These are some random pics of a bike.

https://i.imgur.com/R3roxuC.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/39OoiR4.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/KW7C5YR.jpg?1

My first step is to clean bikes body, remove rust and paint it. There was much oily dirt and dust all over it, especially at the bottom. Second step is to clean fuel tank. There is a very little rust in it, but, in lower part inside there are more of it. I do know that i have to put some money in it, but i am trying to not spent way too much. For that fuel tank, any suggestions how to clean it? There are some suggestions to take vinegar and some screws, shake it from time to time and after a few days, wash it with hot water and baking soda. Then to paint it inside with some epoxy primer, say, Body 989. Correct me if i am wrong.

I hope i will make it looks nice once again a hit the road with it.

And of course, any link with pictures of a bike in detail, would be nice. Especially of wiring. Mouses did their job damn good.

It's an unusual bike that. It will be interesting to follow it being made good again.

Motorcycle Sport Magazine ( now MSL) used to really rate these old Mz's.
The 2 stroke oil will have protected the tank from rusting but I would be inclined to do a proper tank sealing tratment in case the tank has gone thin. It will also stabilise any filter clogging rust particles.
I've used products from these guys and can recommend them

Rust.co.uk

You could use the screw method to remove loose rust , then de-grease with caustic and then acid etch with brick cleaner, before the sealing process.

First of all, thank you guys!

Yes, bike is in good condition because it was in garage for 40 years. Tires are still inflated. Smile

I will post pics as i made some progress. I don't think i will make it running this winter. I have time now, but, soon my time for this bike will be gone. Sad

Let me show you some fresh pics.

https://i.imgur.com/V70fnO3.jpg?1

Fuel tank. As you can see, it is not much, but there is rust. Would be nice if someone can tell me could epoxy primer do the job.

https://i.imgur.com/c5Y1B4A.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/64CsE75.jpg?1

Shock absorber. Chrome finish can be easily restored. Not 100%, but good enough.

https://i.imgur.com/KhXjWOw.jpg

Little painting. I use Max Meyer acrylic paint. A single component to be precise, TC92. Hardener is 6000 with 4310 thinner. I only painted a few parts. Can't wait to see how it will look like. Smile

And one interesting thing...
This is a bike from a country that does not exist. And it was bought and registered in a country that does not exist, too. LOL.

Until next post...

Thanks for sharing.. I love those old MZs..

For the petrol tank - just phosphoric acid (10-15 % conc) for 24 hrs rinse with water then swill out with alcohol (ethanol) to absorb water in crevices. The premix fuel will then be enough to preserve on going I'm sure - no epoxy needed in my view.

Yes, but fuel won't be in it all the time. That's why i thought to paint it inside. It has some paint already.

All that tank needs for dry storage is some oil sloshed around in it.

For road use, all it needs is the gauze pulled off the tap and an inline petrol filter fitted in the hose.

Tank lining coatings are a menace.

So what is the suggestion? Tank has a little rust. I will clean it and it's ok. Tank has some paint inside and it is almost 80-85% in good condition. So you guys suggest not to paint it at all, and just to leave it as is.

Today's progress...

https://i.imgur.com/B7uNI0T.jpg?2

Bike's body is painted, and it turn out pretty good. I am not a master painter, but it is ok, as you can see.

https://i.imgur.com/Gi44FJK.jpg?1

Fenders needs a little work, but there is not much rust at the surface, at the bottom neither.

Air filter box is broken from some crash 40+ years ago. There are some parts missing. I use this epoxy kit and it do the job. I will post pics latter how it looks after.

Phosphoric acid will take care of the rust. There wouldn't have been any coating from the factory - just bare metal. IMO epoxy/paint liners should only be used on leaking tanks that seep through seams or pin-holes.

Not sure if that is pre-mix or auto-oiling. If it's pre mix, I wouldn't worry about the tank. Give is a good clean out to remove the loose stuff, fit a good inline filter and carry on. The oily pre-mix will prevent further corrosion.

If you want to use something inside the tank, I'd use the POR15 system... But I don't think it needs it. Don't use epoxy unless you are absolutely certain it will cope with the increasing levels of ethanol in pump fuel.

I like those bikes. They are delightfully hideous. Doesn't look like it needs much work other than a good clean up and service.

Careful not to "over-restore" it, it's very authentic. Even has the original grey control cable outers.

Do you want me to move this thread to the "show and tell" section?

Also interested to hear, were these the common sort of bike to own in pre-Yugoslavian countries. Were there any Yugoslav models too? I know they used to make some absolutely diabolical cars like the "Yugo" because a few of them made their way to the UK but I'm not sure about motorcycles.

I'd have thought it would have been more common to find Soviet models like IZH/Jupiter/Minsk than GDR bikes?

I know they used to make Tomos mopeds over there at one point because my first bike had "Made in Yugoslavia" on a label on the crossbar

First to thank Blurredman. Manual is just what i need.

Small history of a bike.
My late father bought it back in 1967 as a new one. He ride it for some 12 years and left it in running condition. I never asked him why did he do that. He had a few crashes (one bigger), but not sure if it is the cause. From years to come i just except it staying there in a garage without asking why is it there and not on a road. My dad is gone for 8 years, now i have two more bikes, and few weeks ago it just clicked in my head: Hey, why i shouldn't fix it and hit the road again? It's an old bike, pretty one, and it is authentic. Only turn lights are missing.

Now, he put oil in a cylinder when he leave it. I remove spark somehow without damage. Through a hole cylinder looks nice. Gear box isn't that smooth but i guess it is from that old oil that turn to a grease. Piston is moving without a problem, so i guess there isn't much work to do. Clean everything, new spark, and i am good to go.

Cables needs to be checked. Mouses did their job well. Tank needs cleaning, as i said. New tires, but for now, i will leave old one. Brake pads are ok. It's just, so many years has gone.

For now i managed to disassemble whole bike. I painted bikes body frame. Took fenders to a friend to give a few touches before painting it. There are marks from crashes and i want to make it as good (new) as possible. Shock absorbers are cleaned pretty much. Some of the parts are put back. These days i am focused to fix that air filter box. Rubber gasket is missing betwen air box and body frame, and i am not sure what to put there. Air intake is on a frame close to a front fork and air is traveling through frame pipe to a box.

Now your questions:

@Stinkwheel
I will not over-restore it. I want to make it as close to a first image on this thread as possible. Everything on this bike is authentic, except turn lights that are missing. Hell, i am cleaning old rusty screws, even though i have new ones. You can put this thread wherever you want. I opened this thread so i can ask for help if needed. And to make someone enjoy the progress. Smile
In former YU you could get MZs and Jawa. You could get everything, of course, but these were common. Not many Russian bikes here. Actually, i am 44 and i never saw any Russian bike here.
Tomos is dead. Unfortunately. As a kid i always wanted Tomos Automatic. Maybe i will buy one now, it is around 150e.

@dynax
I didn't ever own a Yugo, but Zastava 101. My first car. Smile Never let me down.

I hope i didn't made a text wall, way too much.
