They used to put funny green stuff in the gearboxes that wasn't really oil, wasn't really grease. I have no idea what it is but it probably does go a bit odd over time. It smells bad.

That said, the gearboxes weren't exactly slick when they were new.

I've moved this to the show and tell section. Do keep posting your progress, I'm enjoying reading what you're doing. It's a welcome relief from "cafe racers".

When I first got into biking in 1972 MZ's and CZ's were the joke of the biking world with CZ's being the worst.

It's funny now, all those cheap eastern European hacks are now desirable bikes (with the exception of the Voskhod Shocked ).

It will look great when finished. Thumbs Up

That bike is built to last - grease nipple on the swing arm pivot! Even the rear shocks have handles to adjust them. I expect the bike could be repaired with minimal tools too.

One thing: The oil in the cylinder - was it two stroke oil? Also, it will have formed a pool around the crank shaft below so make sure to drain it all out. DO NOT rinse it out with petrol or diesel!

I think that is to do with western expectations and thinking.
All those days back when I started biking, a few of the lads had CZ’s and MZ’s.
We as a group were always able to get them going and most of the time keep them going.
Even with our lack of knowledge and basic tool kits we managed.

The lads with zippy Japanese two-smokes were the kings of the pile but had no money because thier bikes were expensive compared to the stinky old Eastern European crap and the jap bikes were more expensive to fix.

Granted the crappy old Eastern European bikes were not the fastest.
Looking through rose tinted glasses, I keep an eye out on Thief-bay.
No way would I pay what people are expecting for a CZ but I’d still like one.

Not sure which oil, but guess is motor oil. Say SAE30, or so. Of course i will first drain it. I am not an expert in mechanics, but i know the difference between 2-stroke and 4-stroke engines. Smile

I forgot a few pics...

https://i.imgur.com/kym3YBa.jpg?1

Fenders are still in the process of fixing marks of old crashes but i managed to put together almost whole frame. Shock absorbers are on its places. I cleaned them as much as i can. The next step would be to get them to someone who could put on them new chrome finish. Right now i am cleaning wheels and preparing back lights etc. Back lights are a little defected. It's just, it don't fits as it should.

https://i.imgur.com/HnVEEYD.jpg?1

Air box is fixed. Epoxy kit is great stuff. With it, i fixed broken parts through screws are connected with reg/rec body plate. I had hard time to cut some of it so box could fit on its place. Right now, the only problem with the box is missing rubber gasket between box and bikes frame. It needs to be relative soft, with diameter of some 50cm.

I am glad you like this i am posting. Thank you all for your kind words.

Also: https://mz-b.de

You might be able to just use black plumbing silicone in place of your gasket?

Last few days i didn't had much time. I had a lot of other things to do. Just to mention bunch of devices which i need to do review for a magazine. But, things are moving...

Fenders are in primer, and are waiting to be painted. Along with with side covers.

https://i.imgur.com/gZwlMQx.jpg?1

Chain and sprocket are ok along with rubber shield. Time made from this rubber almost plastic, but, it is still ok. Chain is cleaned and ready for new kilometers of road.

https://i.imgur.com/1qpqyTE.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/X9QNMJi.jpg?1

That green can is Tuborg antirost new solvent. Rolling Eyes

Front and back wheel are a real mess. There are some sort of corrosion on it which i had a hard time to clean with 3M scotch. It is ok, but not as it should. Those wires on the wheel are rusty, i will clean it as much as i can, but they will stay rusty much of it. The only solution is to buy new.

That's all from me, 'till next time...

Stick the smaller alloy bits in a dishwasher when no one is looking.

I find good old fashioned paraffin (kerosene) applied with a paintbrush/toothbrush brings a lot of really mucky looking aluminium alloy up quite well. Not shiny but ok. That dull sort of finish.

If you have a compressor in the workshop, you could always look into making a soda blaster. Lots of how-to guides on the web.

WEEK 3... end of...

Wasn't doing much these days. But i did a few things. First of all, fenders are painted and placed on bikes frame. Only thing that's left is wheels so i can turn it from upside down back on its feet.

Proper MZ style restoration and engineering. You're doing it how these bikes were designed to be worked on. By a worker, in his garage, with basic equipment.

Week 4...

https://i.imgur.com/58U2yOo.jpg?1

As you can see, things are moving. There are few problems, but i solved them on the row.

https://i.imgur.com/AMF5rTn.jpg?2

Back brake lever is on its position and it works fine. Brake pads are ok on both wheels.

On your feet, soldier!!!!

I love how they managed to make a bike that has the mainstand and BOTH wheels on the road yet not fall over. Seems a common theme for many communist era motorcycles.

Heh, it does not have enough weight to press those shock absorbers down. When i put engine back it will not stand that way. Smile
But, i am satisfied with the progress.

Reg/rec plate. It should work, i think. I think i gonna replace all those wires, just in case.

https://i.imgur.com/acjvBU5.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/qF3irEa.jpg?1

Reg/rec plate and air filter box are on its place. They are holding each other with two screws. I made a gasket for air box from a pipes thermoshield and it fits well. Now it looks like a bike. Smile

Next i will focus on back lights and front headlights housing. There are bunch of electric stuff. It gonna take a while.

Marvellous! The wiring is probably okay but you might want to clean all the contacts with some wire wool.

Great progress Dekip.

Would this be of help to you for the wiring? It's for a TS but the colour/connections might be similar and if not it's extremely early to work around that..

When my mate was doing up the electrics on his TS, he noticed that the amount of material on the contacts in the switchgear is very minimal. Presumably due to shortages when manufactured.

He fitted relays to control the headlight which made an enormous difference to their effectiveness.

The vape electronic ignition/generator systems available for these bikes are absolutely superb by the way. They are fit and forget items. They come in 6 and 12V and give you a reliable electrical supply and a superb, correctly timed spark with no mechanical parts like contact brushes, breaker points and mechanical regulators. Not the cheapest things though. Your wiring will cope with 12v because you half the current when you step up from 6v. You'd need to change all the bulbs though.

It's funny that i could not find crimping pliers in 6 local stores that sells electric material. Lol. Next week i will check in some malls in town. Damn, Belgrade is a 2 mil city, and i can't find a stupid pliers. Weird.

Meanwhile, there are some more pics to show.

https://i.imgur.com/cbfYFXI.jpg?1

https://i.imgur.com/tkjjI01.jpg?1

Just opened clutch cover and as you can see, everything is in perfect condition. Almost...

https://i.imgur.com/jU2gGG3.jpg?1

Throw out bearing is ok. Clutch cable is ok, too.

https://i.imgur.com/9BDgj00.jpg?1

But not everything is ok. Here you can see a broken part of a spring that pulls back starter lever. My guess is that it fits in that hole that you can see in the background. Anyway, it's broken. Any ideas?

And for last. DDR mark. Wink

And one more thing...
This is part of a gear box. On the up there is a oil plug. Gear box needs to be in oil, but which one? And how much to pour oil in it? My guess is to fill it in level with clutch cable.
