I'm turning 40.

So as an award (not reward, definitely AWARD) i'm selling my bright orange Street Triple, and buying something fast with lots of power because I'm 40 now.

And 40 year olds can't be seen on anything too bright and edgy. It doesn't suit our textiles.

So i'm after some opinions please. I've narrowed my choices down to three-ish bikes.

* VFR1200 - I'm 40, so that shaft drive is attractive.

* ZZR1400 - Because quite frankly, fuck it.

* K1300s - because i'm still too young for a GSA.

* Z1000SX - The joker card

VFR and ZZR i would be looking no older than 2012, because i want the traction control (i'm 40 now)

Insurance is equally horrendous on all three, so that's a non issue. Running costs are probably irrelevent too, i'm guessing low to mid 30's mpg wise.

If anyone has experience of any of these that you wouldn't mind sharing, that would be lovely.

Sell the street triple. Get a speed triple.

Simples.

That's deffo a curveball, and to be fair i have thought about it!

What are the strengths of the Speed? . . i know it's more powerful, but it's a fair bit heavier

I don't have one myself but I hear they are fast, with lots of power. Which is pretty much what you said you wanted.

You're 40. I bet they'll let you take one for a test ride. You owe it to yourself.

Z1000sx if you must. It's fun. But I'd just get a newer (765) striple or a ktm duke790. Both are as quick and much more fun once you're off the main roads.

A little too new price wise Smile My budget won't stretch to a 765.

VFR1200 is an insult to the eyes however good it rides, and it does ride well.

ZZR is OK. I'd prefer the GTR with the shaft drive.

The only Beemer I'd have is the K1600.

Not much help am I. Laughing

Then put budget, I'd go 06-10 blade if I had to. But I've had (or ridden) those bikes. 790 duke for 8k otr smashes them all.

Budget is 6k.

Sportsbikes . . . not really interested any more. I like to do a few hundred miles at a time in 'relative' comfort. So it's sports tourers for me now because i want to carry stuff, but also have alot of power.

Aďd 1k and buy a new gsxs750 and get them to supply luggage. It's the most fun you can have apart from a 790! (And cheaper).

I'm not bored of the Striple, it's an awesome machine. But recently my riding habits are changing. I do alot of distance solo riding, and just fancy a little bit more power and wind protection.

And yeah, Its my 40th, so I figured it was an excuse that I could use.

I wouldn't bother with the VFR1200, it's nothing special and considered a commercial flop hence why Honda dropped it and went back to the 800. I was very disappointed at launch, oh and it's offensively UGLY.

The ZZR1400 is well worth the money, but get a 2nd gen not a 1st gen (Although your specification of '12 and above makes that an automatic tick) An absolute hoot if you're feeling brave but be warned you will be constantly beading for camera vans.....you can be doing what you think is 80 and look down and shit yourself when you realise it's over 120.

The Z1000SX, I liked it in so much as it was 'good' at its job but I found it uninspiring kind of like the 1200. Oh and the build quality is utter dogshit, don't even think about winter running unless you have shares in ACF50.

Insurance wise, I think the Zed only cost me 150 quid fully comp and I'm 42.

MPG, err..yeah. The Z1000SX was quite decent, the 1200 not good and the 1400...well let's just say my arse puckered every time I look at the fuel gauge.

Coming from a striple, I'd say the big Zed is a good switch. You'll miss the hooligan and the others just don't have that much 'exciting' about them.

Oh and don't forget the H2SX....because yeah, supercharger innit. Pricey, but good god the grin factor.

When I turned forty I bought what was then the latest bike, a Trident 900, it was a brilliant bike, had it for several years followed by four further Hinkley Triumphs.
Looking at a Royal Enfield Interceptor for my sixty seventh next month.

I've thought this a couple of times, I have an older Speed Triple, that was originally bought by my father as treat to himself for his 65th.
He wanted something light and powerful as he already had two fully faired bikes.

I was over 40 when I bought my Street Triple which has been with me for 7 years.
I don't put many miles on it each year but then I doubt I'd put different mileage on another style of bike.

Well I've just swapped my Fzs600 Foxeye for an FZ1, would make an excellent tourer IMO, plus 0-60 under three seconds, 80+mph in first etc... Only downside is there's so much torque it's boring.

Thanks for your insights. Much appreciated.

I do actually love the Vfr1200, I'm even thinking of trying the DCT

Really? Sick It's only plus is you can't look at it while you are riding. If it had a mother it would have been rejected at birth, a styling disaster in common with the majority of modern Hondas.

I tested a Speed Triple RS a couple of weeks ago.

It's a truly superb machine. If only they would make it into a proper bike by putting a fairing on the damned thing!
