I wondered whether buying one of these for use as a 4 seasons commuter would be an excellent idea? I'm a little concerned the power of the generator might not be up to operation in the extended hours of darkness, would the battery need extra charging? Will it handle well especially on wet/icy/salty roads, and be very reliable, it would not do to break down? Is there anything in particular to look out for?

I've seen the wheels corrode really badly on a 2015-ish model. Would be a warranty job.

It will be a reliable, modern bike. Not sure why you're thinking the alternator is underspecced or would need additional charging. It won't.
Drawbacks are the weight (very heavy indeed, and you would notice it) and the torque in winter. It won't wheelie, it will spin up the rear in the wet when you're pulling away.

Practical note: lots of intricate metalwork on a HD to get mucked up in winter riding; fine if you're not bothered about it looking nice, but to keep on top of it would require huge effort surely?
