I'm looking to buy my first ever bike. I'm looking for something for big trips - I currently live in Brazil and my first trip is going to be 6 weeks to Patagonia and back. I plan to eventually drive back to England.

So my idea is some kind of "Adventure" bike and I think, with my budget and needs, I've got it down to a V-Strom that's a year or two old. Or do I want an F800GS which is about 5 or 6 years old? (in Brazil these are a similar price)

Other considerations, that I can think of, are reliability, ease of repair depending on where in the world I might be, repair costs. Is there anything else I should be taking into account?

And therefore are there any obvious bikes that I'm not thinking of?

Then you will need a car, more specifically an amphibious car.

I'd expect a nearly-new V-Strom to be very reliable if you look after it and don't bash it about too much and keep on top of preventative maintenance during your tour. A 6 year old F800 probably reasonably reliable but depends on what sort of life it has had - are bikes in Brazil typically looked after or ran into the ground?

Ease of repair? Depends on what goes wrong. Anything to do with fuel injection and possibly electronics isn't going to be field-repairable on a modern bike and would probably need a specialist; no idea how far away they'd be! Don't know much about the countries you're intending to visit, but I'd guess old carb'd bikes are probably more common than fuel injected, particularly in more rural areas?

How much stuff are you planning to carry? You'll need to think about luggage capacity too.

DR650 / KLR650 is the obvious choice.

V Strom too complicated, heavy, injected, stupid fuel pump filter arrangement in the tank.

Agree.. The only reason people want adventure bikes could be to look like an adventurer.. But I admit they do have their comforts..

I myself regularly do extremely long trips on my MZs and of course my Honda CX. Nothing wrong in that.

2 argentinians went round the world on YBR's, anything (almost) will do.

But COST. the ecconomy matters. more you spend on bike, less ypou have left for beer. + you not only need to buy but also find fuel. You need fix anything (you most likely) break on the way.. so what is easiest/cheapest to fix?

I would probably use a honda XR125 as base line. good miles per gallon, and sll cg parts found in most places.,, then work pro's and cons from there.

How good a mexicananic are you at fixing stuff?

And remember preparation is all, so racks, luggage, tools,. ready spares, like puncture repair kit is more important than bike choice.

But... no fall off, no break stuff... like arms or legs, so how good a rider is you, & is a 1st aid kit more or less important than a spare spark plug?

All your call... start with the budget & work backwards from that.

Did someone chant "café racer" three times on that other thread?

Anyhoo, welcome back, Tef!

Is this trip going to be largely on paved roads, or rough trail/road mix?

1. I think that these kind of bikes are fairly well looked after.

2. I was thinking of visiting fairly remote countries and areas - Patagonia, for example, hasn't got a whole lot there.

3. I generally pack really light - for most trips I'll probably just take 30 litres max. But for a particularly long trip it'll be more like 50 or 60.

My mechanic skills are zero at the moment but I will make sure I know at least some basics.

Mostly on paved roads. There might be a bit on trails but not for extended periods. As far as I know!

I've done a bit of searching and it seems that the KLR650 has never been available in Brazil!

There are a few DR650s much not many at all.

Whatever bike you choose, keep it simple.
Simple bike = easy to fix when you’re in the middle of nowhere.
Personally , and it is only my personal opinion , I’d stay away from any bike with fuel injection.
Carbed bike = means you can carry a spare set of jets with you Thumbs Up
I don’t think it would be practical to carry spare injectors with you?

Anyway, what the fugg do I know, I’ve never toured outside of Britain??? And all my bike are fuel injected Confused
