Installing an electrical socket

My wife wants an additional socket fitted in the bedroom, must be a double one, preferably with the USB fitments that all the new one tend to have nowadays.

How easy is this? is this something that could be done in an hour or 2? I've been out today and bought the front plate and back box for it and 10m 6242Y cable, now all I need is to connect the cable to wire it up. There is a light switch a few feet above where she wants the socket, could I attach the 6242Y to the back of that?

Suggestions please. I know I'll need trunking to make it look neat, I can do that afterwards.

Do not wire up any power sockets to a lighting circuit, if you don't know what you are doing get an electrician to do it

It would be very naughty to connect to the light circuit even if you only used a table lamp and charged your phone - until you forget. For a start it might not be earthed but the light circuit will be fused and rated at 5 amps whereas sockets someone will plug a hairdryer in should be 15 amps.

You can usually extend from an existing socket if one is available, it's similar to having a permanently plugged in extension lead.
An electrician looking later will probably do some tutting noises.

I had a gaffer who did exactly this once. Plugged in the hoover after wiring a socket to a light switch. Couldn't work out why the light came on when the hoover started, and couldn't work out why the hoover struggled to run up to speed...……

You can spur it off an existing outlet, or you can break into the ring and wire it into that if you want the full current available. The first one isn't that difficult, the second requires some knowledge.

You'll also need some green and yellow sleeving for the bare CPC wire (earth).

If you do decide to do it yourself then make sure that the ring is fully isolated and test that to prove it dead before you do anything.

If none of that makes sense then pay an electrician to do it properly.

Light switches tend to only have live and switched live, so it would never work anyway!

If you spur it and don't break the ring then you'll be compliant under part p stuff.

That wont be happening. Polish Pete is a jack of all trades. I doubt he's got a cycling proficiency badge let alone an electricians qualification. You want your garden doing? Polish Pete, burst pipe! Polish Pete. Work on your car, Polish Pete. Etc etc.

If it's only for a light, you could fit a light only socket and a light only plug onto the lighting circuit. They are smaller than normal plugs and have round pins.
