The rear brake on a 7r wasn't effective, the on/off, all or nothing feel meant it couldn't be used progressively and effectively. It was a nightmare, no way to use it safely unless you had spent a lot of time getting it set just right.
It was like this;
Apply pressure, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, SKID!

(I'm with NtB on the ice issue!)

Last time I encountered ice, dabbed the rear, swapped ends, eventually stopped facing the other way and then dropped it on the road.

Front brake would have resulted in me headbutting the road and much more damage to the bike.

So i must be the only one using a dab of rear brake on corners to give it a little more 'tip in' then.

I like the rear brake, almost as much as i like using gears. If i have to be jumping on the front brake all the time then it's because i need to lose far more speed far more quickly than i'd have needed to if i was reading the road correctly / not accelerating between bends like a missile.

That reminds me of an old 'game' of IAM/Plod, the 'No-Brakes' game. Pick a twisty route to ride, and observer behind counts the number of times the brake lamp comes on. Lowest score wins. Idea is smooth is swift is safe, and you should arrive at a corner at the speed you want to go round it, IF you are reading the road correctly, hence you do it all on the throttle, and no need the brakes, front OR back.... but that is to take the topic through what be good form for a L-earner, through what the track ace's do to elements of advanced road riding.

Need to remember that OP has only just completed CBT, tests are yet a ways off, and the 'level' they need advice for is at that CBasicT one, and what an examiner will be looking for not either a GP talent scout or IAM observer....

A-N-D, actual technique here is not so pertinent; OP don't need any technique until he starts actually using the ruddy back brake, so its that mental block that first needs tackling here.... to get back to the OP's 'problem' some.

That's a question about modulation, not about whether to use it or not.

Can you use the rear brake to aid stability at low speed - yes.
Can you use the rear brake to aid cornering on sharper corners - yes.
Should you hang off it like an ape - no.

The latter is the issue and it doesn't matter if it's a 125 or a 1000cc bike - if you are going to use it, learn to use it correctly.

The solution is not 'you don't need to worry about using it yet'.

Agreed. Now is the time to learn to use it before you have to use it in anger on something heavy and fast.
