Hi

Just bought a GSX1250FA and it has Oxford Heated Grips and a USB/Cigar lighter socket on it (both wired straight in to the battery Laughing Tut Tut ), my question is how do I know how much load is too much for the circuit?

Obviously I guess if I've nothing plugged in to the USB then it's not drawing any power but realistically it'll have my phone plugged in being used as a Sat Nav, probably at the same time I've got the Heated Grips on.

I'm wondering if I can hook up my Hot Hands from my current bike for the Mrs to use on the back and also maybe stick a Hootaz/Denali horn on so it sounds a bit more like "Blarrrrrr - I'm right f****** here you blind c***!" rather than the usual stock "Tink - Please be careful not to hit me, please"

Cheers
Kelv

I wouldn't imagine a problem; the draw from your 'phone is pretty tiny, a horn is only an occasional draw (presumably?!) - someone correct me if I'm wrong, but assuming all the wiring is OK, the issue is the battery getting juice fast enough to keep up with what's coming out of it so on average it will be charged (with enough overcapacity to recharge after starting the bike). I suspect as you get closer to the stator output, it'll mean it'll take longer to charge the battery after starting - perhaps an issue if you only ride very short distances and have all your accessories on each time.

Then again I might be talking rhubarb.

You're not gonna have issues on that bike with a set of heated grips and an extra 10-15 watt draw for a phone charger or satnav.

Used to run a lot more than that off my cbr600 with no issues at all (think heated grips + vest + charger etc etc).

You sure they're wired right to the battery and not just taking power from the battery and switched via a relay? Pure laziness if not Laughing

Both work without the key in or the ignition on. Quick fire way to drain the battery once you leave 'em on when you get home! I'll wire it in via the ignition as soon as I get the chance.

Read the service manual to your motorcycle, it should state the maximum power output of the alternator.

Been trying to find this online but with no joy, any idea which site might hold it?

You don't even need to know, a headlight bulb is 60watts, of which most bikes have two of them, so some 60w heated grips and a phone charger, which is at the very most about 15w, is absolutely nothing to the charging system and battery. Your only problem is if you draw power from existing circuits, you may blow a fuse with the grips, everything should be wired to the battery via a fused relay and triggered from an ACC circuit.

5 seconds on google

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/826775/Suzuki-Gsf1250.html?page=59#manual

Approx. 400 W at 5 000 r/min

Equivalent to about seven 55w bulbs then. I don't think you've got anything to worry about. The heated grips will draw no more than the same as one 55w bulb. 2.1A charger shouldn't draw much more than 10w though.

I'm not sure if you're a troll or just have no idea how alternators work.

I have no idea what kind of power output the alternator has at idle. It's definitely enough for it to keep the battery charging going while the engine and all the lights are running. OP's bike having 1.2L engine, 5K rpm is not there that often, definitely not in the city traffic, so telling us 400W = 7.2 H4 bulbs, does not answer OP's question.

Good maths, but no need.

I have the same bike, Ive run heated grips and usb phone chargers + Headlights + additional fog lights for years on it.

It will be fine.

I will say that buying a bike now... you dont know how good the battery is going to be over winter (if you are planning on riding over winter of course - but I assume you are as its the perfect bike for it)

You may want to keep an eye on the battery or hook it up to a trickle charger overnight during the cold and icy nights.
