Anyone else like a wee dram?

I don't drink anything other than some form of Whisk(e)y these days other than maybe some wine with a meal at a restaurant and have built a nice little collection.

https://i.imgur.com/t5I68IB.jpg

My current favourite non-Islay single malt is Amrut Fusion, a non-age statement Whiskey from India of all places, but still fantastic.
Favourite Islay whiskey has to be Caol Ila 12yr old.
My current favourite Irish is Yellow spot 12yr old. Tastes like nectar.
My current favourite Bourbon is definitely Michters sour mash.

I tend to have one measure every other day or so but with some of the sweeter bourbons and Irish, it is very easy to drink more!

Anyone got any recommendations?

Yes I'm partial to a good whiskey now and again.

I prefer speysides, I bought a bottle of laphraig once but couldn't really get on with it way too peaty/smokey

I've just finished a bottle of Cardhu Gold Reserve that was nice, similar to dalwhinnie 15 which is another favourite, along with jura origin.

I'm currently working my way through a bottle of Old Pulteney 12

And I've also got a bottle of Haig Club clubman on the go, that's a grain whiskey, its alright with ginger ale and a slice of lime.

I think I'm going go a pickup a bottle of glenfiddich 15 for NYE

I got some Monkey Shoulder for my birthday.

I like it neat.

Also have Bells n Teachers to drop in a cuppa.

The Glenmorangie and Glenlivit types I don't like.
I used to like an occasional Glenfiddich.

An EXCELLENT thread Dance!

Recently I've been enjoying quite smokey numbers, then on a recent trip to scootchland I got introduced to Lagavulin 16yo. All others are now not smokey at all, I think I've broken my whisky glands!

That collection is pretty good, I think I'll see if I can get one going this year instead of my usual 'buy bottle, drink bottle, repeat' routine.

I've been doing the whole buy a bottle, drink a bottle thing.

I think I'd like a bottle of the macallan, probably a 12 to start with as it gets quite expensive after that

The heavily peated ones seem to be a marmite thing. I went through a phase were I only drunk the smokiest I could find. Laphroaig 10yr is OK but its nothing too special. Seems to get lots of positive attention online but I think it must have changed over the years. Much better Islay's out there for similar prices.

Monkey Shoulder is a good intro to whiskys. Not too harsh so can be enjoyed by most people.

Yes, I wouldn't waste good Whisky by mixing it with something.

Lagavulin 16 is fantastic if you like smoke. If you want an alternative, check out the Caol Ila 12yo.

If you are talking about the Queen Margot 5yo, then I agree. Excellent value for money. I only got it after getting a ralfy review recommendation otherwise I would never have thought such a cheap whisky could be so drinkable.

Some stuff does need a touch of water...

Anything bottled at 40-44% is usually fine neat but some Islays I still add some water.

Having seen the pleasure others get from whisky I've tried many times over the years to like it (a bit like starting to drink beer in early teens), but to me any so-called 'nice' single malts all taste just like IZAL disinfectant and toilet paper use to smell back in the 60s.

Haven't had that. These were the £17.49 "Ben Bracken" trio which this is one example of:

I tried for years to like whisky and failed. Then I spent a couple of weeks in Glasgow and stuck at it and now I’m cured!

Since then I have been trying the easy ones. In a place with limited options I’ll go to Glenmorangie 12yo. Then a couple of years ago my late father-in-law gave me a bottle he had been given as a gift and had never drunk. It turns out it was at least 30 years old - it was a 12yo Aberlour Glenlivet and it is an easy-drinker.

However I have recently started getting heavier and now enjoy a Talisker. I recognise these are hardly artisan whiskies but at least I’m drinking them now!

Try some Bourbons or Irish whiskeys if you can't get on with Scotch. They tend to be sweeter and more drinkable.

Avoid the super mass produced stuff although Jamesons is a good intro to Irish.

I've started enjoying whisky this year too and have endeavored to try a broad range to find out what I like.

I have found that I tend to prefer smokey rather than non-smokey and a clear favourite so far is Highland Park 10YO.

Depending on my mood, I will also enjoy bourbon; I've not tried loads but currently enjoying a bottle of Woodford Reserve.

I also live close to the first registered whisky distillery to open and operate in England for over a century and deeply enjoy a visit there. They have their own whiskies and do distillery tours but also have a huge range of world whisky in their shop and serve very decent food too. The rural location makes it a decent destination for a weekend bike ride too, with one obvious drawback..

A group of friends and I once tried "Paul John" - another NAS Indian whisky and it was excellent - might be worth a try.

Good to know as I received a bottle from Santa Thumbs Up

Another Caol Isla fan here but I like to try most malts, unfortunately Speysides give me raging heartburn so I tend to stick to Islays.

Current stock comprises a 14 year old Shieldaig Islay, an unopened gift of Penderyn (Welsh and I'm not sure how I feel about that!) and last year thought I'd go native and try bourbon so there is a very pleasing $15 Evan Williams 1783 that is half gone.

I have got to be in the right mood for whisky and it's taken a bit of a back seat since we started brewing our own beer.

Not really whiskey but Irish Mist is nice for a change from Southern Comfort.

I don't really have the taste buds for anything >10yo single malt. Quite happy with Jamesons, neat.

Pray tell what local hooch that would be, I didn't think Shetland had any distilleries.
