So before I got the DT engine parts vapour blasted I took out all the rubber dampers that were wedged between the fins. I could reuse them but the rubber's in a pretty poor state.

I was thinking of cutting up bending silicone: it's the stuff you'd stuff in plastic pipes before heating and bending to prevent kinks - a bit like the old trick of filling metal pipes with sand.

Silicone has a fairly high melting point (>200ºC) will it be okay or is there some "magic" rubber than you're meant to use on air cooled engines?

People often use silicone to seal between downpipes and silencers so it should be up to the job temp wise.

Dampers are still available new. You’ll want to fit them as well, they do take the edge off the engine noise.

The Toblerone sort maybe but I haven't found anyone still doing the old rubber rope style.

I'm not sure unless a road used bike needs to be more refined. But to me an air cooled two stroke is all about engine noise, that's why they sound so good! My TY 175 having a very similar engine, had no rubber dampers fitted in the finning, and it sounded really good!

I've seen silicone hose used for this purpose. It's effective.

I personally like to hear an air-cooled 2-t ringing its arse off but some may consider this antisocial.

If I can remember from my 2t days it's called harmonic vibration & depends much on how the fin is shaped.

Do without = bike goes faster.

(it won't break the engine not having any fitted)
