my bike broke.

i was travelling at about 80mph (70mph if you're traffic police), engine died and back wheel locked up. i skidded for about 40m along the A20 with a car chasing my arse. kept it up somehow (hence luckiest biker) but the bike is f*cked.
the guy that came and picked it up dropped it for me at brands performance place, i was on my way up there anyway cos there was something wrong with the engine starting and not being able to tickover properly. the guy that picked it up said he thinks its the bit that mixes the oil and petrol thats gone, so the piston rings have had no oil and scored inside the barrel. bugger. i can't afford to fix it, but we'll see what brands say.

i've only had the bike a week and a half.

Well thats a bit of a bugger.

However if your lucky its just trashed the top end, so you should be able to get away with:

New piston + rings
New small end bearing
Rebored barrel, or a new one if it pops up cheap somewhere.

This is pretty much just a 2 stroke major service.

Sorry to hear about you're probs,it must be heart breaking fo ya Sad
Did you buy you're bike privately or through a dealer?

If its from a dealer and you've only had it a week or so you should have some warranty with it,even if it didn't come with warranty they should still put it right after only a week and a half.

Well done for hanging on to it though Thumbs Up That could've been a very nasty one at that speed Sad

i checked it. it's nicely round until you get to the flat patch. the bike was a private buy, so no such luck with warranty. how gutted do i feel. called in sick with a broken heart

Unfortunately thats the risk with private buys, sometimes you can get a stonking deal saving £100's if not more on dealer prices BUT if something goes wrong its tough shit, some you win...some you lose but thats life innit.

Nice one for keeping it up. It's not really something you can learn, more of an instinct (and not a situation I've been in, touching wood here, so I probably wouldn't either), but try and pull the clutch in, in such situations.
Of course you're not thinking about that at the time and the only way to devolp instincts like that is for it to happen a few times Confused

(Hugs), you really don't seem to be having a lot of luck, it is worth it in the end though, honest Wink.

I've seen plenty of people try to get this sort of thing done under a shop's second hand 'warranty' and been told where to go. At least you have the money you saved to repair it.

Something I still do to this day after owning a succession of 2-strokes is to cover the clutch, especially if I am ragging them. If you ever hear funny noises coming from your bike engine, pull the clutch in and close the throttle then coast into the side of the road and check it out. If you are real quick, you can sometimes catch it before the bore gets scored, then it is just a case of letting the thing cool down for a bit and heading off again.

Saved me a few months ago when my supermoto seized the engine (660cc 4-stroke!). I had the clutch in before it had slid more than a couple of feet.

2-strokes usually warn you before they seize up by changing the engine note and loosing power (tightening up)...taking action at this point will usually save your engine. 4-strokes tend to seize in a much more fundamental and mechanical way with fast moving bits of metal hitting others and bending, you get little warning of this just a clatter, clatter, BANGScreeeetch.

Hi

Possible the oil pump has gone, but not that likely. Most likely it just nipped up, maybe from the rings needing replacing.

PJ Engineering sell a kit for (I think) £250 for a new barrel and piston with gaskets. Chances are this will be the cheapest way to fix it. For me it is a gentle afternoons works to do the top end on an RS125. Expect around 3 hours labour from a dealer.

I too tend to ride covering the clutch lever after seizing up bikes on numerous occasions.

All the best

Keith

brands hatch phoned. they think it might even be the gearbox, i'm so angry, this is the third bike i've had that has ended up f*cking me over and i bet the dealer is gonna have a field day with charges. i dont have any spare money for it, my credit card's full from insurance deposit, i've got a loan to pay and i get bugger all from work. nice lesson learnt. give up bikes. my stepdad has offered to pay for the parts if i want to do the labour myself, and he'll help, i dont think he realises how much i may be paying out, but i kinda like the challenge

I got a new bike after about 2 weeks from selling my old one, within two weeks it blew its spark plug out, two weeks later after some helicoiling and new rings etc back on the road. Abotu a month later (4 days after being caught at instant ban speeds-typical) it toasted its coil and has been languishing in my garage since. Seems im gonna be about a grand down by the end of this Crying or Very sad

Dont speed kiddies
Or get really old four strokes

Unlucky, Sad but, as you say, good that you could walk away from it without a scratch. Very Happy

My previous bike, also an RS125, suffered a major mechanical failure too, but at least I managed to get about six months use out of it first. Ended up giving it away to a mechanically minded mate to have as a 'project'.

Well done for keeping it up. Riding in trials I always have the clutch and the brakes coverd with 2 fingers. Got told of fo it in my CBT though! Maybe the thing to do is to go on an off-road course or something and then you learn to control locked wheels etc.
Bugger about the bike though.
Good luck with geting it fixed etc.
Pete.

to be honest i didnt know what was happening to the bike when it happened, i just knew i had to keep it straight and not use the brakes at all, took a couple seconds to work out ot pull the clutch in, at least i'll know for next time, hopefully i'll be fortunate to survive the next crash unscathed as well. i still cant believe i didnt drop it, really proud of myself for that, just so upset that this is my third bike and already after a week and a half i'm getting quotes for a grand

Yeah thats true.I bought a 3 year old Rover 216 GTI a few years back, after a month it blew a head gasket and they refused to fix that under warranty as they were saying I let it get low on water and I was racing it,they came out with all sorts of bullshit until me Dad paid them a visit...I don't know exactly what he said to them but they fixed my car for me and gave me a loan car whilst they were fixing it,nice one dad! Thumbs Up

Yes, you are correct it maybe the gearbox that has jammed because thats what happened to mine but luckily after a legal battle I got my bike back from Ride On Motorcycles without any cost to me for repairs carried out on it, due to Part 5A of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (Amended later).

The mechanic stated to me that one of the gearbox's circlips had some how broken loose and allowed two gear cogs to come together and so when I changed from 1st to 2nd gear I ended up engaging two gears at the same time ie gearbox jammed ! I was lucky I was moving slowly at the time as I was about to enter a carpark.

5 gear cogs had to be replaced and I think the spark plugs too except they did fully clean bike from top to bottom and including the entire engine inside/out. Also it was retuned with my newly installed K&N filter.

It's bloody amazing to ride now ! Smile

I was advised by an official Kawasaki bike dealer as those parts new that bike dealer got for it would have cost at retail price alone about £600 and if had bought ithe bike privately I would have been far better getting a 2nd hand gearbox or even an entire 2nd hand engine as it would have been cheaper than the cost of getting a new parts for it and being rebuilt.

So see if it's better getting 2nd parts and have a good mechanic rebuilt it at an agreed cost to you as it may save you a lot of money in the long run....

good news, due to the fact i'm the quietest child in my family and have never asked my parents for money, they had offered to pay for the parts if i would fit them, but they've decided to just give me the full £540 for the service, reboring, replacement parts and new back tyre. its good to be quiet sometimes Very Happy should be able to pick the bike up on wednesday, all ready to go. it turns out the problem was that there was a K&N filter on it making it too lean, as well as thin oil (which i was advised to use... i'll be changing that choice), they reckon i may be riding the bike a bit faster than the previous owner... oops... but it wasn't totally my fault
