If you want to be a biker for the long term and you live in a high risk area and you want a future with desirable bikes in it, you need to plan to never, ever claim unless it absolutely cannot be avoided, e.g, you cause a costly accident and a 3rd party claims on your policy, or your bike is stolen and not recovered and you can't afford another bike, even a cheap, short term substitute. Even then it would probably save money in the long run to not claim, take up cycling and start saving for another bike.

In the OP's scenario I'd get 3rd party only cover online and pretend the bike is garaged overnight. MCE will probably be cheapest. Get the best Datatool alarm and the best Biketrac tracker and a sold secure Gold lock and chain and a disc lock and a cover. Total bill about £1500 plus the Biketrac subscription. Keep your phone charged and make sure to answer it during the night, when the bike may be stolen. The thieves will move the bike a short distance and wait to see if a tracker prompts its recovery. A friend of mine uses this strategy with his Blade, which has been stolen and recovered undamaged 4 times. He lives in Chiswick. I also use this strategy with my BMW. I live in Brixton.

If the bike is stolen, don't report it. If you crash it, fix it with used parts. Invest in training to reduce the chance of causing an accident. My theory is that MCE will only investigate and unearth the lie about the garage if you hit them with a big claim from a 3rd party. If they do, I suppose you'd be pretty much uninsurable after that. I hope not to test my theory. But maybe I'd be dead, so never mind.

I suppose the garage thing is only relevant if you claim for a bike stolen from your house.

I'd be curious to know the stats on bike thefts: percentage stolen from back gardens vs garages vs driveways, etc. whether the bike had a cover, locks and various other security...

I mean, we all talk about "do this, buy that" but it'd be nice to know what really makes a difference.

I was told by a few people not to list security devises other than what the bike comes with, ie. an immobiliser because if it was nicked and wasn't locked up with your super tanker anchor chain you declared, they would (could) use it as a get out clause.

It's like the garage quote. On mine it states a brick built garage. I phoned them and told them it was a steel walled garage (not a tin shed) and they made a note of it but there was no difference to my policy costs.

It still reduces the quote significantly for TPO. The reasoning given by the MCE monkeys is that the bike could be stolen and used by criminals, exposing them to a big 3rd party liability. Pffft.

And if you claim for theft from another location, the insurance investigator will still want proof of the garage so they can refuse your claim for lying.

Yes, fair enough, insurance companies are rarely desirous of paying out no matter the circumstances - no need to give them further excuses Sad

I used MCE for about 4 years without any issues (also without any claims). I used their free recoveries for punctured tyres a few times without problems too Thumbs Up
They're the cheapest but the catch is obviously the insane excess on their policies.
Regarding the price in london, most of it is caused by area theft risks. 3 years ago I moved house literally 800m away but far enough to change my postcode, the premium went up £2000 because "computer said so" although the new house had a private parking out of sight etc... opposed to street parking on the old one.

Yeah you would. Especially if it was the cheapest price you could find.

Without the lube too. I wouldn't pay that at all.

Ah, a new (or almost new) 125 in a crime ridden area: getting fucked from both ends!

No. you would find out why it was so expensive, and then sort the root issue. Or just wait it out if it's an age/claim issue that can't be worked around.

Insurance is a necessity, and in my 30 years of riding bikes... It doesn't matter which insurance company it is.. they're all tossers and looking out for themselves, unless it's a clear cut case of 'Other parties fault', so they can milk the other parties insurance.

Remember, if you claim your tariff will increase regardless of fault. I'm just extra friggin careful on the roads now after a lot of scrapes.

Personally don't believe there's good or bad advice when it comes to insurance companies as they change their rules and policies on a fkin whim!
