Ktm LC8 engine: superduke or SM?

Bored of my R1, thinking of trading it in for some sort of KTM with the LC8 engine - superduke or SM.

What are people recommendations for going for either the 950 SM or 990 superduke?

The 950 SM looks more suited to commuting which I do a lot of but the superduke is more fun according to the interwebz.

What do?

Either will be a laugh, a big v twin compared to il4 is almost instant in throttle response, shifting the power lower down the revs makes a great road bike.

I've got the rc8 which is similar engine albeit bigger. This choice was a long time in the making, good chassis, fantastic brakes but the engine was the overriding decision maker, after half a mile on the thing I'd committed to buying it in my head.

Thanks a bit nervous making the move to a big v twin but fancy a change. May have just sold my R1 so the superduke 990 is on the cards.

I'd never ridden anything over 800cc before jumping on the RC8, the throttle had already been switched to a progressive cam profile, smoothing out the power delivery. 3000rpm and over is when it all starts happening, compared to 6k on il4s.

It's enjoyable, unless you're riding in poor conditions. You'll learn to adapt riding style fairly quickly. Like all bikes your lean angle will limit how quickly you can get back on the throttle, but you won't be waiting as long for anything to wind on before getting shoved forward.

990 was lame, 1290 if you want to ride like a dick. Wouldn't wheelie one for any length of time though.

Fewer the cylinders, more dramatic/fun every throttle input is. Also, many 4 cylinders give you false sense of safety, that put you in the three digits zone way too often.

But, if I had to commute, I'd get a 4 cylinder machine again. They are just sofa king smooth. Smile

My younger brother rides a much modified GSXR1000K5 as well as a KTM 990 SMT and he enjoys both as they have their own characters.He often says he would ride the the SMT all day with the more comfortable riding position for long distance.But he said he would never get rid of the Gixer as that bike puts a much different smile on his face.
