I don't know that I'd call it ancient art as much but it's certainly interesting and easy to learn.

If you want a skill that really takes time and effort to perfect try my hobby - hand scraping.

Here's my friend demonstrating it by rebuilding some rusty old lathes. I went and checked them out for him to appraise them and see if it was worthwhile taking them on. He bought the lot in the end and had them shipped to Norway.

Fuck sake. Are you like this in the hoose too?

I didn't 'really' mean it is an art. 🙄

But I regularly see some lockwiring that didn't even start out as a decent attempt.

Pfft, you lot should come back and talk ancient art when you've mastered cutting mitred dovetails using hand tools. Laughing

Can only imagine the damage done should the Chinese get into making lock wire. Anyone who's handled Chinese mig wire will know exactly what I mean!

It's an interesting subject and one not seen that often. I've seen some useless attempts at doing it on street bikes - looks the part but done incorrectly and was tied in a way which would encourage bolts to loosen.

Hand scraping? I know of it and have seen a ships crank hand finished that way by two blokes but man it's not really fascinating video material. I do try but can only make it to 20 seconds.

Still a normal practice in the marine industry especially anywhere in an LNG taker where something could come adrift inside the pipelines.

I can do it but it never looks as pretty as it should Laughing '

In my old proddy racing days there was an unoffical competition for the best presented bike judged by the scrutineers. You needed a serious case of lockwire OCD to even come close.

I always lockwire my oil filler cap and sometimes some other vital nuts/bolts. I usually use my TIG welding rods, but they're a little thick and difficult to bend. I eventually treated myself to a lockwire kit off ebay. It's ok for the money (about £14) but the supplied washers are
very thin and bend when you start to turn the pliers, so have to be doubled up. Does a good job though! Embarassed

Used to hand scrape bronze bushes on printing m/cs, all roller bearings now. My lockwiring on the racebikes was function over form, not pretty but it worked, i.e. passed scrutes and nowt fell off.
Getting the missus the right xmas pressie is a true art form.

Don't know about anyone else but this has just highly OT targeted advert just popped up in panel at the bottom of the BCF screen:

Phallus Penis Krater Ancient Greek Ceramic Vase Pottery Erotic Art Copy 470 BC

WTF I thought? Then I realised that (a) the title of this thread contains "Ancient Art" - tick, and (b) the ebay listing has been posted into the wrong section of ebay - in Motorcycle Exhausts!, so, tick that too.

Quite clever, really.

It's a copy. Why would you want a cheap copy of a bloke carrying a willie. The original I could understand but not that!
