Does everyone wear ear plugs? is there a good brand to use in the helmet or will any do. My buddy can get factory ones but they seem to stick out.

cheers

It depends on the bike, the helmet and the speed.

On my Trophy, no, because the fairing keeps the wind off at any speed and I couldn't hear the stereo properly with plugs in.

On my old Busa, yes all the time and I used standard foam plugs I appropriated Whistle from work, they were fine.

On my Stripple, sometimes but always on long journeys.

Yes. I have measurable hearing loss at some frequencies. Unclear if it was due to riding without earplugs or shooting. I just use the foam builders type.

You can get "selection bags" of earplugs so you can try several different types to see what suits you best.

If they are sticking out, you probably aren't putting them in correctly.

It's nothing to do with the bike engine noise. Hearing damage comes from the high frequency noise of the wind rushing past the helmet. Apparently at a level that can cause damage after 30 minutes of exposure at road speeds.

I bought one of those selection packs and the Howard Leight Laser Lites ("rhubarb and custard") were the easy winner. Comfortable, effective, easy to fit. I bought a bulk pack years ago and it'll see me out, I reckon.

I always wear them. I’ve got a massive box of E.A.R. ES-01-020 and always have a few pairs in my jacket pocket. I use a new pair every time, never reuse a pair. They work well at keeping the bad noise down but I can still hear my helmet speakers (satnav, music, phone etc).

I don’t want an ear infection. That’s why I buy a load and dispose of them. I also found that after the first use the expanding foam type never quite expand the same again.

I wash them in hot soapy water when they get too minging then rinse and dry.

They go kind of odd and floppy when wet but firm up again when they dry out.

Not because I'm cheap, it's just there's nowhere particularly nearby who sells them and I never remember to buy them when I'm passing/on ebay.

Last lot I got were at the front counter at screwfix (presumably the screwfix equivalent of sweeties at the till).

I think I got the last lot on Amazon, and the lot before that from an online safety equipment supplier.

fair enough, think you would need a good few uses before that happens though. I imagine any use with mucky fingers runs that risk

Despite buying in bulk (a box full of bagged pairs) I store the current ones loose in my jacket pocket. I've haven't had any issues and they never look or feel tired. I do have clean hands though. I change the plugs after several weeks just as a precaution.

There are also the "in ear" silicone putty ones that are moulded to fit if you don't like something shoved that far into your ear canal. I tried them but didn't get on with them.

You can buy DIY kits off eaby, lots of how to videos out there. You can even build headphones into them. My number 1 tip is try to get it in and as close to right as quickly as you can, then don't fiddle with it again until it's set.

Yeah nice one, clever. Now the OP who is clearly ignorant of the cause of hearing damage has given you a 'helpful' rating and thinks that unless you go fast hearing damage is unlikely.

Leearchertog - you WILL suffer hearing damage if you don't wear ear plugs. Wind noise is the biggest culprit and it's very damaging. It's insidious too so you won't even notice damage but a hearing test will identify it. My first hearing test for a PTS medical was about 18 or 20 yrs ago and the doc told me "you ride a bike - you should wear ear plugs". He said he could always tell because all bike riders have the same damage to a greater or lesser extent.

These are good: "3M E-A-R Ultrafit Reusable Pre Moulded Earplugs". I find them much easier to use than foam ones. If the stem is a nuisance, shorten it.

I've been wearing the yellow roll up foam 3M plugs at work for over 25 years, I couldn't possibly do my job without them.
I push them in as they can go but then pull them out slightly before they fully expand.
For me it takes pressure off the eardrum which makes the plug work far more effectively.
I do like the Klaizen plugs I bought a while back for the bike though. Decent high frequency sound suppression with no eardrum pressure.

I have the Pinlock ones which are comfortable and reduce the noise in my IS-17 helmet.

I haven't used anything else though so can't say how they compare to other options.

I always wear them - I didn't for a few years, and when I started, it felt weird and wrong. Now it feels like that if I don't. The best I've come across are actually also amongst the cheapest:
