This is one of these things that kinda bugs me. Every single female (that I know of) that owns a car/bike/plane/some form of transport has always given their form of personal transport some kind of name.

My mums car is named betty.

My sisters car is named Mozart

my next door neighbors named their car sarah

but now I have discovered that some Men have started with this new trend as well.

My brother in law named his car hamster and my friend at work named his car 'optimus prime' (To be fair I could not figure out if he was joking or not, he has a very good poker face)

Am I going mad, is this is a new trend or has the drinking water in our local area been contaminated with lsd? Thinking

This is nothing new, people have been giving machines names for centuries.

Shaggy is correct.

All boats and ships have names.

All the industrial steam engines and traction engines had names.

Steam railway engines were named.

The thing is though, they all had that elusive thing sometimes was called character and at other times is known as unreliability. Laughing

The modern car or bike has the 'character' of a lump of bland cheese.

True, as I know that you have to name a boat with a name as it is bad luck (supposedly) not to give it a name, but I thought that this did not apply to cars....... Maybe I should name my bike the Rolling sarcophagus Thinking

Ridiculous practice.
They shouldmt even have a gender.

Edit, having said that, I suddenly recalled that I have "the Snarley" and "the Milanese Falcon" in my current stable Shifty

But they don't have characteristics imposed upon them* by those titles. And definitely not gender.

*other than the generic coolness of being owned by me, of course.

'Which bike are you going on?'

The red one.

'They're both red'

The slow one.

'That is not exactly what I call slow'

The other bike is faster.

One is called big red and the other little red.

I would call one "the MV" and the other "the Ducati". But then, I've always been a bit weird that way Laughing

Well the original big red was the red cb250rsa, then I got the red ducati so it became little red.

It all makes perfect sense to us.

All my bikes have names, based on the reg plate. Girls names for the bikes, and when I had them, lads names for the cars etc. Also - it gets a nicer (well, less hostile) attitude towards them from the OH.

Current/recent bikes are.
PE64 *** Penny
P2** VTY - Victoria the Viffer
DG** RKJ - Rebekah
PO11 *** - Polly
PO** DSV - Daisy

I know the Viffer could have been Verity, but the bike isn't *that* old, and Verity strikes me as an old name.

Names vary but currently based on reg plates (and not really names)

GSXR has 494 in the plate. In Chinese this sounds similar to "Die Just Die", so the bike is called Die.

ZZR has 04, 0 sounds like by wife's name in Chinese, 4 sounds like die. This bike is called Die Wife.

V75A has 404 in it..... This bike is called Die Wife Die.

I'm not very good at getting auspicious number plates.

Had a sierra 2.3D that my mate called plume.
Only redeeming features were a joystick for the speaker balance and a sunroof that didn't leak.

The exup was called the Exup Valdes' by me and 'the eggcup' by everyone else.

The sprint is called 'the strumpet'.

I've never named any others.

My mates missus names his bikes.

The Ducati 848 is known as the Duchess and his VFR is known as Jane (Jane Honda)

Personally as a rule in our family, we don’t name bikes or cars.
