Wifie wants an easier to use smart TV.

We have an oldish, 2014/5?, LG that works fine but it's only 1050 HD and the smart function is so stupid I use a fire stick instead and wifie hasn't got her head round how to find it on the tv. Rolling Eyes

So I'm presuming they have got way better in the smart/apps/interactive bit that even my wife can use one and that there probably isn't much difference in screen quality with them nowadays.

I prefer going for a name brand for something like that. Maybe another LG or a Samsung but open to suggestions.

So a 4k smart TV, mid sized and if it is compatible with Alexa would be good.

I have seen these on Amazon. Worth looking at?

So in terms of screen quality, you can't really beat the LG OLED TVs. At my old company we used them to evaluate video quality of our professional video products, so that's a pretty decent endorsement.

However. LG are known to have a bit of controversy over their 'always on' smart features which listen to conversations and things. This was a couple of years back now, so it might not be a problem these days, but if that kind of thing bothers you it's worth looking into.

Also worth noting that if you watch a lot of SD programmes, they will look like shash on a 4k display. HD won't look all that, so in my opinion it's only worth upgrading to 4k if you have plenty of 4k native material to watch on it. Netflix I think has plenty of 4k content now, and the latest PS and Xbox iterations are 4k... but if you watch loads of normal TV you might find it looks worse than it would on a 1080p TV.

I'd advise going into a shop and trying out the smart features as ease of use is very subjective in that regard.

I looked for months at specs etc before I bought my first modern tv and I can say that 90% of the time my old Panasonic crt delivered a better picture. I would also like to moan about features that arent features after a year or so. I think my widi is fucked or removed...god knows? I give up trying to make it link to the laptop now.

I wouldnt be interested in anything with Sony movie mode thing - I forget the name. Its shit and makes everthing darker, and it gives you less to play with to fix it. I'm still pissing about with settings over a year on. I find that hd dellivers the best picture overall - I have a slow internet connection so blame that on any lack of detail in 4k mode.
All ITV channels deliver a stunning pic in hd, somehow.

Miss my old tv.. Crying or Very sad

Really? Shocked

Well that knackers it then because I suppose it's 50/50 between SD and HD and I don't have huge access to 4K. It was more future proofing it.

It would depend on the screen size, to get full benefit 4K wants to be on a larger screen but it will still look better on something under 50" and then your SD won't look too bad either.
A lot of freeview channels run at truly abysmal resolution but they aren't ones watched by many.
There's a tendency for on board apps to gradually stop working, my Panasonic originally had Vimeo and several others just no longer compatible three years on.
There have been periods where youtube hasn't navigated properly but so
far they fixed it after a week or two (the only one I use).
You could get round it with a separate box if they eventually stop support.

I take my glasses off and everything is SD... that's the budget option Very Happy

Drag the wife to a Currys/PCWorld megastore and get her to try out their TVs.

Entirely too fiddly for someone who mostly watches terrestrial TV (BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and all those) live to air, but we use a projector and FireTV stick with apps.

Mostly we watch Netflix, Amazon video, and, very occasionally, BBC content. There's ITV and Channel 4 apps but you need to go through ads to use them, which we tend not to. We watch live to air content about 4 times a year, almost always some kind of sport, it's very rare.

The projector (1080p, so 2k not 4k) projects onto a 100" screen (that's 4x the area of a 50" screen). Plenty big enough to get a cinematic feel, not so large than 720p (never mind 1080p) content looks bad. Anything below that is to be avoided - DVDs are dreadful.

Almost certainly not what Polarbear wants (it's not the most simple solution, it's not a direct TV replacement), but it has a few advantages; cinematic screen, dumb display that doesn't spy on you, and app hardware provided by a technology specialist, meaning it's competently built and can be cheaply upgraded independently of the display hardware - went from 1080p FireStick to 4k FireStick for £40 or so.

The FireStick remote is very simple, can control the volume and power off for the projector, and HDMI triggers power on, so a single remote does everything and it only has about 10 buttons.

Oh and it works with Alexa.

I’d personally go to Richer Sounds, 6 years warranty and people who aren’t trying to sell you something you don’t need and know their products.

Another vote for Richer Sounds, not only do you get a decent warranty, they price match internet prices, and they're not far from you Smile

I got my projector from Richer Sounds - decent price which I'd researched online, which is why I went to them - and they sold me an overpriced ceiling mount for it.

Friendly salespeople, mind, and if the store is local, it's not bad to be able to go back.

They'll pay your parking if you buy a TV| from them.

They used to give you free ice pops in summer too, don't know if they do this any more.
