My Aprilia MX125 has a clutch problem, the lever is floppy and doesn't engage the clutch when pulled in. It has been adjusted all the way on the handlebar, however when I tried to adjust it in the case, the bolt wouldn't turn.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You might need to take off one of the side covers but with that sort of bike it should be easy enough to disconnect and remove the clutch cable. I'd check it's not damaged or kinked. If in any doubt, get a new clutch cable as that's a cheap and easy to swap component. You might get lucky an drop an "aha!" moment when you try and take it off Smile

After that take a look at the clutch itself. Have you got anything fancy on there like a Rekluse or is it stock?

I will take a look at the cable, and the clutch is stock. Any idea about the adjustment bolt not turning?

Can you upload a photo of the bottom end of the cable?

Yes, will do as soon as I get a chance as my bike is at a bike club and I haven't had time to go there lately.

Your bike is at a bike club? You’ve lost me...what’s a bike club and why does your bike stay there? It’s not stolen is it?
I take there’s nobody at this bike club who can show you how to adjust the bottom end of the cable?

No no it's not stolen. I don't know if its a widespread thing but near to me is a bike workshop where you can rent a hydraulic bike bench and tools. There are people at the club but they are not always there or are working on their own projects.

I have since looked at the cable and it was the adjustment in the crankcase that needed adjusting, the bolt was stuck but I managed to undo it.

However I now have a new problem, the gears do not engage. I believe that I have put something back wrong so I'll have a look at it again. Should (hopefully) be simple as the gears did engage before.

Hope that clears everything up for you.[/quote]

If the clutch isn’t disengaging properly the gears probably wouldn’t select. Have you sorted the clutch fully?

If you've adjusted all the slack out of the cable but the clutch still won't disengage to allow a gear to be selected, then if you have adjusted it the correct way, and not played around remounting the arm at the lower end, then without seeing the photo's of the adjusters at each end, it's a guessing game.

It sounds like your adjustment is wrong. When the plates wear or the cable stretches, you're adjusting the cable to be longer, so more thread should be showing at the top adjuster, so more towards the middle of the cable and more should be showing towards the middle of the cable at the lower end.

Photo's would help.

If this is a genuine club with hydraulic ramps etc, there must be someone there who knows what they're doing and can give it a quick one over surely?

The adjustment was fully out at the handlebars before I adjusted it in the case. Now it is around halfway and the arm in the case is all the way back (I do not have photos but should be able to get them next Saturday when I go down there, assuming I haven't already sorted it).

There should be someone next time I go that could be able to take a look at it.

Hi,
Apologies if this has already been said or I've not read this properly but doesn't your bike have a rotax 122 engine, same as the rs?
If so then clutch adjustment is also done at the engine end.
Remove plastic cover & use the "special tool" supplied by aprilia to loosen adjuster.
It's actually just a cheap alloy box spanner & can be substituted for a 1/4" socket (10 or 12mm irrc), & mole grips.
It all becomes obvious when you.pop off the plastic cover Wink

cheers,
GAZ

Hi yes it is a rotax 122, and I do have the special tool to adjust it in the case. The original problem was the fact that the adjuster bolt would not turn, however it is now free and the clutch can engage but the gears do not. Others have commented that the clutch is incorrectly adjusted and this is why the gears do not engage, however I may have put the gear selector shaft back wrong when I took it apart as it fell out. I have yet to try readjusting the clutch further or looking at the selector.
