Jag XJ6

I think this. That does look like the Jaguar hood ornament.

The leaping jaguar does rather give away the make, but the other clues are four cowled lamps and the almost straight and very high swage, highlighted with a pinstripe.

It must also be a series 1, after that the grille encroached into the bonnet and you would've been able to see the top of it, even at that angle.

Yep Shaft has got it, have some karma my son

I thought it was but the wing mirrors on the actual wings
put me off as most had door mounted mirrors until I checked and
saw some series ones circa 1970 had them.

That was the first thing that made me think you were right. The hood ornament just made it far more likely.

In those days, any form of external mirror would've been an optional dealer fit and door mounted often didn't work because a lot of cars then had opening quarter lights (as did the series 1 and 2 XJs) so you had to mount the mirrors so far back, you would have to turn your head to look in them.

I work with a lot of Stags and the door mirrors on those are bloody useless, unless you're reversing; you can't really glance in them and see anything significant, because they are almost level with your head and that's with me being quite tall and having the seat all the way back, if you're a shortarse they could almost be behind your eyeline.

I assumed jaguar when I noticed the jaguar on the bonnet and the 4 headlights but wasnt aware of any that age that had the fender mirrors so I was most confused.

I used to have a jacket with patches on the elbows and shoulders of a similar nature made by Wolf.

Frank Thomas was another popular jacket maker at the time.
