PostPosted: 14:39 - 16 Jan 2020    Post subject: Exam invigilator Reply with quote

Anybody here done this? I've just been for an interview to do part time invigilation and I can't work out if it is too good to be true. What the college said is that if I get the job, I can take a laptop in and do other work at the same time, provided I keep an ear out for whispering and walk up and down every 15 minutes.

If this is a true representation of what an invigilator can do, it means I can do the office-based element of my usual work whilst being paid an additional £8.25 an hour for the pleasure of doing it in the same room as 30 silent, scribbling individuals, rather than working with just the dog and t'internet for company. There is a bit of setting up beforehand and collecting papers afterwards, but other than that I can do two paid jobs at once.

There has to be a catch because in life everything has one. Anybody know what it is? All I can think of is that I can't listen to music, make a brew or fart loudly...

Usually done by semi-retired or recently retired folk who can come in and work the occassional hours as required.
I'm not aware of any catch to it, a lot of invigilators sit and read a book and walk an ailse every few pages.

I think someone may be tugging your pud, or maybe you're trying to tugs our pud?

One of my favourite SiL's duties involves recruiting exam invigilators & despite my bestest of efforts, I'm totally not what they're looking for.

They know what they're looking for.

That is unless it's a part of the public skool exam system, where a nothing degree in a nothing subject, gets the family idiot a high position in the FO, or even (shudders) the MOD. God forbid that the imbecile ever enters the 'family' business, what what.

Yes, that's probably it.

I used to invigilate now and again when I worked for the college.
It’s not hard, 99.99% of the time you just watch over those taking thier exams and make sure they don’t cheat.

Be entirely clear about what they can and cannot do during thier exam, for example use of calculators, I-pads , slide rules, phones and so on.
Make sure you have a point of contact in case a student plays up (it does happen).

Communication between students is a no no!

A be robust enough not to let them try to pull the wool over your eyes or tell you how things are going to be done.

Wifie used to be Exams officer in her school and therefore in charge of hiring, firing and overseeing he invigilators.

All I can say is she used to moan like fcuk about them quite often because they could have exams cancelled due to invigilators not following the rules exactly and when that was GCSE's the sh1t would hit the fan.

Exam papers are kept under lock and key until issued in the exam room and collected straight after the exam and there are very strict rules about handling them.

Also, at her school, nothing was allowed into the exam room that wasn't there for the exams including invigilators phones or laptops. In other words nothing that could remotely set you up as cheating for someone, so in her school you certainly couldn't carry on with your own work.

Someone wants the loo? You have to call a second or even 3rd invigilator to escort them because depending on the size of the exam there are a certain number of invigilators.

Then the same sex invigilator has to escort the pupil because you have to check the cubicle before they use it and wait outside. (especially for external exams).

Oh yes, if you can't keep order, and there will be the odd little scrote who can just about write his name and nothing else and wants to disrupt things, you won't last long. You aren't allowed to beat them into submission. Rolling Eyes

Anything specific you want to know, just say what and I'll ask her when she gets in tonight.

I've just read the JCQ rules, which accord with your good lady's experience. The woman who interviewed me said that when invigilating she takes her own work in, so it may depend upon the governing body for the particular exam - either that or the interviewer was telling porkies!

I thought it was too good to be true Shocked

The thought of sitting there for hours on end counting acne doesn't appeal quite so much, especially for only £8.46 ph....

Sounds a lot closer to the reality than trying to stay awake by playing Fortnite on a laptop Smile

About 10 years ago up here it paid a tenner an hour. Bit tight of them to pay so little these days - no wonder they can't get staff!
The same folk who do this type of work will also sit in cars at road sides and 'count' traffic whilst doing those surveys.
I suppose it's a little extra income but does it also mean you're getting old??

Yeah I've been thinking about it for a while now.
But it wasnt paying enough.

Having said that ... the one I saw earlier today was paying over £9 although that probably takes London weighting into account.

I asked her that when she came in last night. She said every exam was conducted with exactly the same conditions whoever the exam body was so there was no confusion. The school implemented the most stringent and kept it the same for every exam so I suppose some schools could be more lenient.

On the plus side, I bet you occasionally have to deal with someone who flips the fuck out. That would add some interest to the monotony.

One thing I remember from one of my first university exams was the invigilator coming up to me at the end and telling me I was holding my breath when thinking intently, then hyperventilating afterwards. Which is probably unhelpful. He suggested I should chew gum in future exams.

I was being too clever with this one - thinking I could get paid for sitting in a room full of sweaty puberts, whilst using that time for my other work. Money for nothing if you like....

My Mrs has been an invigilator for 15 + years, amd what is and is not allowed very much depends on the college/schools exam officers, some who are more disciplined than others.

In my Mrs school, no laptops, mobile phones or any other electronic device is allowed other than those permitted such as calculators.

In computer or IT related exams obviously computers are allowed, but for normal exams mobile phones have to be handed in, they are even checked for smart watches and invigilators are removed from the list of invigilators if they are foud with an electronic device.

My Mrs gets paid over £11 an hour because of her seniority, and she has said that for the money it is quite easy but it has changed a lot since she started and many exam officers have become slapdash and panic when the examining boards pay a surprise unannounced visit because they do not have good or required practice in place and then the shit hits the fan and is susually directed at the invigilators who are only doing what they were istructed to do by the exams officer.

She is really considering giving it up because of all the crap thatat levelled at them, not to mention the abuse that is thrown at them by some of the shit kids and teachers who think they have a right to dictate to invigilators in the exam room and then get upset when the teacher s asked to leave.

Now you come to mention it ... you'd have to pay me a lot more than 11 quid an hour to do that.

The College has responded to my email asking for clarity. It does adhere to JCQ rules, so I couldn't read a book/do some other work/watch internet porn or whatever.

Worth a try...
