The time is near for when I need to replace my trusty old Argos value vacuum cleaner. It's only lasted 10 years but probably more because I'm too lazy to clean up..

Anyway, this time around I'm wanting something that's more a universal use vacuum cleaner. Something I can use indoors or for cleaning the car or occasionally in the shed.
My shed contains more metal particles than dirt. Cars can be difficult to clean well and need a better sucker to do it. The house? Might use it there too if I can be bothered..

I don't need a massive machine. I don't need a huge variety of tools for it. Wet and dry would be awesome. Less than £80 (hopefully). A machine where I'm not constantly replacing sh*tty bags or hunting them due to rarity via the internet.
I'd prefer to be able to get the machine personally in places such as Toolstation, Machine Mart etc.

Can anyone recommend a good versatile powerful vacuum please?

I too am in the market for a new vac so shall watch this topic with interest...

My requirement is for one that is good at picking up dog-hair, pubes and bum-scratchings. If I could get one for £80 I would be well-chuffed!!!

Get a Numatic Henry. Not sure if they've changed much over the years, but they were the vacuum of choice for a lot of cleaning companies. They also work with no bag. I used to have a Henry, now I've got George, still Numatic, but also cleans carpets, if you want.

This is where you shouldn't turn your nose up at a second-hand hoover. The EU had a clamp-down on "wasteful" vacuum motors so new ones can be a bit anaemic Sad

I have a Hetty (the female Henry) bought it for the wife. they are good it gets abused and doesn't die. She uses it for the house and the patio. I use it for the garage and the car. One word of warning though dont fuck around with the cheap off brand accessories the proper ones are vastly better quality and hard to break.

The Henry range are great but I had 2 fail on me last year and I thought I'd try something else.

I bought one from Wickes for £42.00. It's wet and dry and seems more powerful than the Henry I had. It's great for the car as well.

For the workshop make up a cyclone dust extractor (£16 from ebay / amazon) on top of a strong barrel / tub. 99% of the dust and crap won't make it to the vacuum cleaner, including water if you're using a wet n'dry vacuum. Suction stays more powerful for longer.

For the house a Henry with uprated Hypoallergenic filters is hard to fault (although the wife complains that it's heavy to lug about, so she bought a handheld Dyson).
For the workshop an Earlex wet n dry or a Karcher wet n dry also have a blower function that is usefull for drying the bike off.

+1 on the Henry love-in. Got one at home and we use them at work too and a vets practice gives vacuum cleaners a hard time.

I've spotted the Titan and was hoping someone could give feedback. Nice one.

I had a 3rd hand Henry years ago but left it in a shed over winter and half full of dust and fluff. Warning! DO NOT do that. Lots of mice moved in and made beds in it. The long hose was like an igloo access for them. Those b*stards p*ss and sh*t everywhere and chew everything. They then died in the Henry Sad
It wrote the machine off. Didn't matter how much cleaning I did of it the smell of ammonia and death would appear once the machine warmed up.
Henrys and others seem expensive these days?

Yes that damned stupid power limit for vacuum cleaners. Utter madness. That's exactly why we need actual experts running government and not people with art degrees. Limit the power rating and it takes longer to vacuum clean something and therefore just as much leccy is used.
I've spotted the 1200 Watts limits or thereabouts.

That's an awesome idea for a cyclone system for dirtier zones. Could easily be stored out of the way too. Excellent advice thanks.

Yep, i have a Titan and a Henry, the Titan is used in the workshop mainly and the Henry is used in the house.
I rate both machines as the tops

Screwfix has lots of reviews, sorted by "Newest" is useful, perhaps there was a change of spec. because the older reviews are not as good as the newer ones.

They can both blow I see, this is very handy for unblocking hoses or getting rubbish out from behind things.

Just take a minute chaps, sit down, relax & have a think about it.

At what stage of your life did discussing the relative merits of vacuum cleaners become a worthwhile pastime???

i have one of the titan units connected to a cyclone and tub.
all in a small box on wheels.

it gets solid abuse and shows no signs or giving up anytime soon.

the cyclones really do work and put most of the crap in the tub with little getting into the main body of the vacuum cleaner or filter.

I agree: If I had the choice, I'd lay gravel in my house instead of carpeting. No need to clean it - just a rake now and then to level it.

There's a loophole though. The limit is PER MOTOR. My Mum has an upright one and it has two seperate 900W motors, one for the brushes and one creating the vacuum.

I actually have a robot vac (a Xiaomi), that runs before I get up every couple of days, used to be every day, but less wear and tear!.

I have had to use an actual handheld, because stairs, But a RoboRock wins for the domestically failing Smile

I haven't actually used my George for about 18 months!
