Hi all,

Anyone know if this is a sign of a clutch slipping and possibly needing new plates?

When i'm moving along (example in 4th gear) and i either come to a bit of a hill or need to overtake someone going a little bit under the speed limit, i pull in the clutch, drop a gear and then the engine seems to rev a bit before the selected gear seems to engage properly (like a good second or two after releasing the clutch).
My clutch cable is adjusted correctly and its only started doing it in the past couple weeks.

I'm fairly decent with a set of spanners and make sure to maintain my bike well, but as it's my only transport i'd just like a second opinion before opening the case up and looking inside (i work nights and don't have a garage so i'm limited to what time i can do any work).

Cheers.

Same engine? Same oil spec?

pretty much, that page is for the custom but i think its the same engine.

i usually use either Halfords own brand motorbike 10-40 or castrols version (if its on offer), never had a problem with either before (they are both to the same spec as is in the haynes manual)

There's loads of info out there, this might be interesting: https://ybr125owner.blogspot.com/2014/08/yamaha-ybr-125-clutch-problems.html (you could get the cover off & have a look, make sure you don't knacker the gasket, or have another available).

See:- HOW2: Overhaul Clutch (Small Honda's +)
Its a different bike, but it's much the same job.

It does 'sound' like the plates are cream-krackered, but? 125's do tend to get rather sorely abused by Learners, learning gears and slkipping the clutch a lot, cables get stretched, and plates 'can' wear out, though probably more common is cluster chuck of 'things' like practicing pull-away, finding the biting point, plus crap mechanics and lack-luster oil changes, oft with the wrong' oil, and far too common these days, 'car' oil, that contains friction reducing additives, that never should come in contact with devices that actually rely on friction to work, like clutches....

For the faff, I would bite the bullet, and replace the clutch plates AND springs, if one is shot other wont be far behind; flush the engine oil, thoroughly, and fit a new clutch cable. The bits shouldn't cost an arm and a leg, and once done you should have plenty of confidence its 'good'.

Just get the bits, get a Haynes manual, and go for it. And get on with it.

Its not an enormous job, is very satisfying, doesn't demand a fully equipped workshop, or necessarily any special tools.. though DO check, as the How2 for the little Hondas they do beg a special castilated socket that in the example I spent longer making than doing the job it was for, and having the proper tool (I later bought!) needn't be exorbitantly expensive and CAN make the job oh-so-much easier and quicker to get done.

If he's just looking at or replacing the plates he won't need that.

Sounds like classic worn clutch symptoms
but test the cable and actuator arm for stiffness

Plates springs etc easily found on Ebay

I've done it a few times and its pretty painless
best have a new gasket to hand though.( Ebay again)
you can check/clean the oil strainer while yer in there

Tip:
Make a note of the bolts and where they come from
as some are a bit longer than others
I had to helicoil a couple of case threads on a low mile ybr engine where some numpty tried to force
the longer bolts in the shorter holes recently and snapped the bolts off

You can do it without removing the exhaust and just backing the rear brake adjuster off
so the pedal can be tied down out of the way

Nothing to add except it's an easy job if you have a manual. (I by far prefer a paper manual than an electronic version when working on a vehicle.)

Get the bits. Make sure you have the tools and a manual and spend a happy Saturday in the garage. Thumbs Up

I should get a gasket just in case, and look at the thing first. You don't know what the exact problem is!
