I've just received a brand new pair of EBC brake shoes for my Honda CB 250(y). The bonded linings are only 3.5mm thick, that seems and looks extremely thin, especially considering shoe replacement is recommended at 2mm. The Haynes manual (which I know can be inaccurate) recommend 4mm shoes. Perhaps I'm stressing over nothing, I just dont see much longevity in use with these new ones?

Brake pads on my triumph only have a thickness of about 4mm when new and I'd suggest that these are more safety critica than the rear on yours.

Are you going to send them back in the Hope's of finding some that are 4mm somewhere else which could have much softer friction material and so wear quicker or are you just going to fit them? Rear brake shows last a fucking lifetime due to little usage anyway.

Nope, they just look thin, I'm replacing the brakes shoes due to a seemingly impossible to cure squeaky/ squealing brake problem.

They will last forever. Don't worry about it. Thumbs Up

I thought that too, but mine only lasted 12 months and 10k miles on a BMUU Adventure. Shocked Confused

Linked brakes? My trophy eats them because of this.

Anyway, he is saying shoes so I presume it's a drum brake and they will last forever.

I hate the thought of linked brakes.i choose how much braking effort goes to each brake based on the road surface and weather. If I bought a bike with linked brakes the first thing I'd do is remove the links.

I've had them on 4 bikes that I can remember, 2 Goldwings, a Blackbird and the Trophy.

TBH they have got better over time. The Blackbird was horrible, the Goldwings OK and the Trophy is hardly noticeable but it's incredibly complicated.

I don't see the point, it's almost like trying to make it a car, one pedal does all.

The Varadero had linked brakes and I didn't notice any issues.

I've got them on the CBF600. After riding a while you forget all about them. With ABS as well the bike feels nice and secure in the wet TBH after riding with them I think I prefer them to separate brakes, although I haven't had to bleed them yet..

I take it you haven't tried to brake whilst filtering on loose grit without abs then? With no abs (which is pointless on a bike anyway because most systems don't work whilst braking when banked) you don't have the option of just using the rear.

I know this is getting well off-topic, but for everyday riding the CBS/ABS feels really secure in everyday, all-weather riding. Never tried CBS only on gravel though..

I bought some EBC brake shoes for the front brake on my Honda XL250SA dirt bike that I owned before buying my XR400R.The standard Honda shoes worked okay but they were expensive if buying OEM.So I went with the much cheaper EBC option and they were useless.Even after 200 miles they were still not working in any way like the OEM shoes. So I ended up buying original and from the very word go they worked, with no need to bed them in.My confidence in front braking resumed Thumbs Up
