In central London there is a number of Q-park underground garages where you can essentially keep your bike as long as you like. There are also council garages in the City of London. I was wondering if there is such a thing in Manchester or if there is another way to cheaply store a second bike?

Not that I know of; I don't think there's anything like the amount of underground infrastructure around here compared with London (probably not helped by the fact you don't have to go down very far to hit rock).

Google is your friend for Manchester Q-Park and the facilities they offer.

That's easy, they don't offer motorcycle parking in their Manchester car parks. Wink

Any idea on how to keep the bike safe if you have more than one without paying 100 pounds a month for the garage?

If you find it you'll make money as it's probably the holy grail around here . . .

Seriously, your options are limited unfortunately and plenty of people are limited to one or even no bikes because of storage limitations. You could try and befriend someone (or utilise an existing friend) who has some space. But ultimately you need to be comfortable having the bike out of sight for ages at a time (presumably) and unless you put it to rest under darkness and ensure nobody ever sees it, there's always a risk someone will come for it when the residents are away/asleep. Personally, in your shoes, I'd just have the one bike - I'd be worrying about the one "off premises" too much.

Thank you very much for the advice @ThunderGuts. I think I will eventually have to rent a house with the garage.

I was thinking of renting a container or maybe a season ticket for the cheapest NCP underground somewhere near Manchester, i.e Bolton. This is just a consideration as I don't live in Manchester yet.

It'll go missing if you do that - a bike parked in an accessible place on a regular basis is a target; they'll suss out the security and come for it at some point (assuming it's worth nicking and most bikes are).

Containers aren't infallible (see the other thread on them floating around) either and they shout there's something inside them as there's usually a good reason one has been stashed somewhere, i.e. valuable stuff inside. I have always thought the same thing about "proper" bike sheds to be honest, again why would you have one if there isn't a bike inside it.

I think your best bet, and I realise that this might not be financially viable, is to just try and find somewhere that has a garage already then you can get multiple bikes inside, although they're not certain to be secure, at least when you're home you can have some awareness of what's going on, plus only a minority of garages have bikes inside so unless you do things like openly display the contents, it'll probably be fairly under the radar.

It appears that Manchester is worse than London with regards to crime. I keep mine in London for the last 3 years. I switch between bikes regularly though but one is always in the garage.

I don't know not having lived in London; I do know that lots of bikes get nicked in Manchester though - its a different place than it was even just a few years ago. You might be fine chaining the thing to a lamp post; I see some bikes tied up apparently very unsecurely and they don't go missing, but then again you wouldn't notice the ones that do vanish and I'm always seeing moped scum around the city centre (no number plates, balaclavas, riding reds etc.). It all depends on how risk adverse you are.
