Should we insist that everyone around the world start using Great Britain or GB instead of UK? Even we us UK instead of GB. It's about time we brought some pride back in our language.

Which language would that be? Cornish? Welsh? Scottish Gaelic? Scots? Doric? Manx?

We're still the United Kingdom that being the definition of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is just the Mainland of Britain and is only called great because it's the biggest island.

The UK – a sovereign state that includes England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Great Britain – an island situated off the north west coast of Europe.
British Isles – a collection of over 6,000 islands, of which Great Britain is the largest.

I do find it kind of ironic the Pavlovian way people yell "triggered" ... Very Happy

It is even more ironic the Pavlovian way triggered people try to defend their triggering and victim hood.

You lost, get over it.

Just to try and calm things down a bit:

"United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" is a political title whereas "Great Britain" is currently geography. I think that's what was meant Smile

Before that it was "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland" (Act of Union 1800) and before that it was "Kingdom of Great Britain" formed from the "Kingdom of England" and "Kingdom of Scotland" in ~1707. (BTW, Wales is "only" a principality not a kingdom.)

So it's going to be "Kingdom of..." if anything. Although "Queendom of Great Britain" might be more accurate given Her Maj being the longest serving monarch.

For the record, I'm not a big fan of Pavlova either but I would feel triggered if it was offered to me as dessert.

We get the name Britannia/Britain from the Romans I think
who used Great Britain to refer the larger island and Little Britain for Ireland
I think Ireland should change their name back to little Britain
I think they'd like that, someone should suggest it.

Albion was another ancient name.
We were part of a kind of European union way back then too as part of the
Roman Empire.
Bloody Romans eh?, what did they ever do for us?

I think we should be called "Old Blighty", and have a Cup of Tea as our flag.

Interesting question, academically (actually Ukraine uses "UA", for what it's worth). And vehicles from Northern Ireland have to display GB stickers when in the EU.

I just found the following link:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/3y6i74/why_uk_registration_plates_have_gb_as_eu_country/cyaytaq.compact
which seems to indicate that the answer to the discrepancy is now buried in the mists of time; although there is a suggestion that it dates back to 1910, which is before Irish independence; ie when the whole of the island of Ireland was actually within GB.

But Ireland has never part of GB on account of GB being the name of this island and Ireland is a totally different land mass.

Ireland used to be part of the United kingdom .

Yes of course. So, a total mystery then.

It's all semantics and historics (and maybe some histrionics) but there is also:

- international competitions such as the Olympics - Team GB is the official name of the team managed by the British Olympic Association, which includes any Northern Irish competitors who choose to compete for GB rather than Ireland. Channel Islands, Isle of Man etc all have to show up as "GB" if they want to compete.

- nationality - there is no collective term for "UK of GB and NI"; there is only "British" or the individual states.

I have no particular angle on it all (pun intended) - I am English and/or British, dependent on the context. If people would rather be Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or whatever instead of being British, that's their prerogative, but sometimes one is forced to choose British by the limitations of committees and systems.

I was born and live in Scotland so I am Scottish.
I have a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport so I am also British.

But when our national team play against England then I'm a Jingoistic, Dyed in the wool Psycho-Jock

Although if it's a team GB event then I wear my Union Flag with pride 🇬🇧

I'm with the Saggy DA here. Possibly an age thing, but I always refer to this sceptred isle as 'Blighty' when abroad. That won't change.
