Plasticine in the letters to get the shape.
Trace shape onto coloured 4-6mm coloured plastic
Cut and file / send to smooth edges
Hot glue in place.

Why go to that trouble when you could just pour in dyed epoxy resin?

It depends how confident he is with epoxy resin and how long he wants to spend on it.

This way would take under an hour and someone with almost zero experience can do it, Ive done almost this exact process with 10 and 11 year olds flawlessly.

Absolutely if happy using epoxy and you have it to hand - go that route.

Thumbs Up

well we will see.
i have ordered some epoxy used for this purpose and a range of pigments.

I'm going to test on a bit of scrap wood first off and see how it goes.

i will post some pictures later this week with progress.

I only mention it as my daughter went "have you got any epoxy?" yes love, how much do you need? "maybe a litre" Shocked

Apparently there's a fad for making jewellery and stuff from it.

You can get water based epoxy resins these days, designed for deep pour and bubble free. Wink

Epoxy resin: Expensive option. A mixture or resin and hardener. Needs to be accurately mixed in the correct proportions. Very little by way of fumes. Tends to warm up them slowly thicken as it cures. More temperature sensitive. Can form an alkene blush on the surface under certain circumstances.

Polyester resin: Cheap option. A resin with a catalyst added. More catalyst = quicker setting. Gives off offensive fumes. Starts to gel then abruptly cures in a chain reaction which can be quite strongly exothermic. More tolerant of temperature variants due to the ability to control the reaction by varying the amount of catalyst added.

Both can cause progressively worse allergic reactions in skin contact so PVC or nitrile gloves.

Working with small batches is best, the smaller the batch you mix up, the longer you have to work with it.

If you want something to be a good job rather than a cheap job. West Systems epoxy resisns are hard to beat.

I'm surprised at all this stuff. It's just a box. It's a modern box made of whitewood by the look with "TOYS" routed into it in huge fairly unsightly letters. Hopefully in 20 years it will look a lot better for wear and tear and knocks and dings and polishing and achieve a more classic look. Bung some colourful paint in it, which will age with the rest of it (hopefully) instead of standing out like a sore thumb. Examples from elsewhere:

In fairness, my first suggestion was:

"Coloured wood dye then wax? Keeps it wood then and a very robust/repairable finish. "

I think the OP has brought a brolly so your Rain won't totally spoil his parade.

It's a good excuse to get the tools out and have some fun experimenting with finishes and effects. Thumbs Up

That's exactly the case in point.

I'm not dissing the bloke's box, I'm saying it's not a valuable antique that needs French polishing and inlaying with gold and never ever touching again, it's a box that needs using and by use making into a toy box that looks played with and cherished (as in the example), instead of a played with and used thing with huge and brand new last-for-ever bizarre plastic incorruptible letters on it.

But whatever.

That's what I think as well. It's cheap enough that if it all turns to ratshit, throw away, but nice enough to warrant spending some time on.

Ocht, allow him you. ☹

I understand the plan it to make a plain box a little more joyous.

It's like, 'The canvas is white what makes you think that you will paint a masterpiece on it?'

🤣

indeed Islander and Polarbear...
its just a bit of fun and a chance to try something new.

i have the resin now as well as the dye and glitter.
i will do a test piece over the next few days and then if that goes well move onto the box itself.
