Hi all,

I am in the process of racking up some experience on my 125 with a view to doing my MODs for a full A license.

I park my bike in my front garden, where I can chain it up and keep an eye on it (local scrotes nicked my first bike). Only problem is, I'm not directly next to the road. I have a footpath with a dropped curb (about 10 yards to my house) and a big feck-off triangular patch of grass as my options to get from garden to road.

Anyone know the legal ramifications for pushing a bike over grassland/footpath? I seem to see differing opinions online.

I'm hoping to get something a little more "dressed" to entice the Mrs into going pillion, but I have no idea how the hell, I'd even start getting it onto the road!

15 metres is maximum you can ride on a footpath, but if you are pushing there is no limit but the engine must be off and you must also wear a helmet Thumbs Up

You couldn't be regularly going over the grass there would soon be a muddy track if not a rut eventually.
The odd time for service or wash would be OK if not entirely approved of.
Footpath probably OK unless someone wants to pretend you are a hooligan and nearly knocked them over.
A lot of driveways you have to cross the path not much different.

Thumbs Up Excellent. So in theory, as long as it isn't under its own power, I'm safe?

Good to know. Cheers! Very Happy

Where I live, the actual hooligans are far too busy committing violent crime and property theft. Getting buffeted by a dude on a bike would be considered a minor inconvenience! Laughing

There is a Crimebodge video that references parking and driving on pavements. From what i recall, driving across a footpath is illegal unless to access a property, and then it should be across a dropped kerb.

However he noted that there are pretty much zero prosecutions for the offence of driving on a pavement. I would expect any issue you encounter will be courtesy of a miserable neighbour who decides to take issue with you having a motorbike in the front garden / riding across a bit of grass.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/general-rules-techniques-and-advice-for-all-drivers-and-riders-103-to-158

Rule 145 (and the Legal Giblets in the links.)

Be careful not to interfere with pedestrians using the footpath or cause a nuisance. (Depends on your relationship with your neighbours I'd guess. If any have a prior beef with you, your fam or friends.)

It's "15 yards from a road", but even then I think you're further away than that. However, as said, if you're pushing it, you're not riding it. I'd go route 2, 'cos also as said the grass will get very slippy and muddy and the path is better. If you get a bigger bike remember it will be heavier.... Smile

Be nice to the neighbours , don’t rev the engine or ride it to the house and take option 2.

Similar situation to my house. I ride it up the path all the way to my front gate. As long as you're not a dick (i.e. wait for peds to use the path) no one will care.

Oh, and don't try riding across the grass bit in this weather. Ask me how I know...

Option 2 and widen your gate to make the turn easy peasy.

Thanks. I'm not entirely sure. It was just "stone" on the description of the house.

I think I'm going to go with route 2 and also widen my gate. I can scrape by at the moment on my GT125R, but I might need to go larger to convince my wife to pillion (she wants an armchair on the back), and I don't fancy my chances with anything close to a fully dressed bike as it is!

Thanks for all the replies.

You may not have to widen too much, if I remember rightly, the GT125R is quite big for a 125

It is indeed. Tiny picture of it as my avatar.

Ahh Thumbs Up

I have the GT250R.
I can’t complain, it’s been a good little bike.

If I was on L-plates, I’d be happy to have the Hyosung 125.

I love it. Did my CBT on a GN125 and it felt tiny. I felt like Krusty the clown on his little unicycle.

I saw a big-engined Hyosung at a garage and fell in love. Soon as a saw they did a 125 with the same general dimensions, I was IN Razz

No they don't.

A footpath is a public right of way across private land and if someone chooses to ride a motorcycle on it then that's a civil matter between that person and the landowner.

A pavement on the other hand is part of the road and so is covered by the road traffic act, various other bits of legislation and the local council have an interest in it as well.

The measurement is "15 yards", since it's illegal to use metric on road signeage and law Wink
