The thing is
I'm no purist and love to fuck about with my old thing
and good luck to others doing the same with theirs.
But
When some twat pisses way lots of time and money on a bike then
asks big money as if we're all twats as well, I get somewhat irritated
and offended.

Taste, discretion, decorum... all words that don't seem to be in the Café Racer lexicon Sad

I've been having a binge watch on Shadetree Surgeon's XS650 chopper build and some of the work is mind numbingly bad. He's unapologetic and maintains it's 50% learning and 50% pissing people off in the comments section so all-in-all going at it with the right attitude. I mean why would you go with a foot clutch and suicide shifter if not out of spite Smile

Going back to my first point these projects generally seem to entirely lack a coherent theme or completely forget subtlety as a vital part of artistry.

It's the faddishness of it that annoys me most, the f-ing brat, bobber, flat tracker thing that was never apart of UK motorcycling.

A 'street fighter' I can bear if it was put together for economy reasons - dropped bike, chepaer to get back on roads without expensive plastics.

Cafe racer if done well can also be good, but it has to be the right base bike, so not a fucking CG125 or any mono-shock IL4.
Modifying a bike and actually make it look better doesn't always require a pile of money but it does need a decent amount of skill and artistic flair - attributes in very short supply it appears.

All this wrecking bikes to make a custom bike is nothing new. A lad at our work decided to build a chopper out of a BSA C15. He paid someone to 'convert' it to a rigid frame, not the most fantastic of jobs and at a time where welders where not ten a penny like they are now, probably twisted steel stuts replacing the shocks or something.
Then there was the aerosol paint job red and orange if I remember correctly.

I gave up with him when he asked ( knowing that I had a had a few parts chromed) " If I put a cork up the exhaust hole and the carburettor hole ( his description) will that place chrome plate my engine?" " Er, no Ken they won't, you have to take it to bits".

Yet another worthless box of bits.

The difference nowadays is that Ebay did not exist back then , so that the person having wrecked this bike would have no way to unload it. I would have sat at the back of his dad's garage, until either another lad at work gave him £3.50 for the engine, or his dad took it to the tip, after he got some girl pregnant and had to get married and so moved out of his parents house.
No wonder good classic bikes are worth so much , most of them ended up trashed by clueless twats. Sometimes nothing changes.

Yes I see, well in the video he says he'll have your arm off for 1300 quid. Confused

Seems like a young bloke having a bit of fun and trying to earn a few quid - as we used says 'at least he's not robbing handbags off old ladies' A bit odd to film/broadcast your bodges before selling the bikes though.. Hey ho Rolling Eyes

He's no spring chicken, that's for sure. And it's funny you mentioned his garage, as I had the same misgivings when I saw the video. Laughing

I think he probably represents what average people are doing with old bikes nowadays at home. Personally, I think there's a sort of missing link between "utility" bikes of the past, and their rather hapless "reinvention" in the present. In the past, there were lots more people riding motorcycles, displacements were smaller, and for many more people than today, they were a transport tool. Nowadays, they are marketed purely as a leisure accessory, even when they're rather mundane and bland. They're often dressed up to look like something they're not, as well. Therefore many people simply don't "get it", when it comes to old bikes. All bikes in the old days had an element of fun about them, but if it doesn't look with an R1, with cunningly designed plastics and massive tyres, they don't sate the desire to be respected. I do believe that that's at the heart of the cafe racer craze. The last thing people a lot of these people want to do is enjoy riding a bike. Trying to go any faster than 40 on a challlenging country road is an eccentric sideline - who's going to admire that? That sort of thinking... Anyway, I think that guy in particular wants to start a bike business (oddly, at the same time as learning about the basics of bike mechanics), but he might have missed the boat on the cafe racer craze.

Oh, and I think the soft focus filter on his earlier video was probably out of embarrassment over the paint job on the tank.

And again... WT actual F? Mirrors on the ends of the handbars... fine, fine... and then indicator bar ends?! And then to take a close up photo?!?!?! An argument for post-birth abortions if I ever saw one.

I just hate how they go to all the effort of changing the tank and making everything nice and clean, but the engine cases still look like shit and they couldnt be arsed to fix the brake and speedo cables to the forks. The seat also looks like some shit off ebay, which would explain why it's too short.
The speedo is also im KM/h for some reason.

Odd... put the reg in the ol' GOV website: first registered 2001 Thinking

Of course, from the previous listing they do at least say it's an import. Photos of that show a partially covered plate that matches the new listing.

IMHO the first guy bought it from an importer, did a little project, had a little fun and moved it on - no problem - it's these "Metric & American" guys that are pulling a fast one.
