I was watching Forgotten Weapons on YouTube and Ian got a question from a viewer:

"Should I convert my antique gun to use modern, freely available ammunition instead of the rare calibre it currently needs?"

Answer: no. "If want to fire something like a lever action Winchester on the range you'd be better off keeping your 1873 as is and buying a modern reproduction."

I thought of this thread Very Happy Maybe 20 years ago you could make a case for the handmade café racer aesthetic but there's lots of this style of bike being made now. RE Continental GT, for example.

This ones not miserable, looks pristine and has very low miles but jeez!
Bids start at £10,750 ??
Seriously?
The thing is with any 'classic' bike you daren't actually use it
as a motorcycle or it will wear, tear and depreciate so effectively
you're buying an ornament.

If I had a spare ten grand, I'd set aside say 1500/2000 for a drugs booze and prostitutes spree then use the rest on something I'd enjoy.

The word "investment" appears in the title and the description.
I reckon it should be supplanted by "poor investment decision". If it were an investment at that price today, surely he would hold on to it. I suppose he's counting on someone coming along whose strong point isn't "investing". He's their "financial advisor", I suppose. If they buy that at £10K, they've probably already dumped the rest of their savings into Stuart Garner's Dominator pension scheme.

Another nice low mileage one is currently going for £4250:

I don't know - a lot of the modern cafe racers aren't quite right. I see a lot of Chinese ones here that look the part but are all 125s and presumably of lower quality. Royal Enfields I wouldn't look at. Modern big 4 bikes like the CB400f don't quite work because they don't have the classic lines and expect to hide this with plastic. More modern ones still like the Vitpilen are cool and a modern version of the cafe racer but certainly not classic.

Certainly all of those listed above are better than a badly converted CG. But, if someone really likes the CB360 I would say that there is nothing modern that directly competes with that and yes, you would need to make it yourself

Why? Sounds a bit racist to me Wink

Yes, modern takes on "the look" are a bit hit and miss but nothing stopping you from using it as a blank canvas. Certainly better than starting on an old canvas...

Why not? By all accounts the new 650 Continental GT is an excellent bike.

Probably just snobbishness, really. I've heard they are terrible bikes, but maybe that's an outdated view, but really the main reason is that I just like something about the big 4. A vintage Honda to me just sounds cool. A new Royal Enfield just doesn't, even if its actually a superior bike.

'Real' cafe racers pre-date in line fours. The End,

The End came I think in the early 1970s. There was no longer any need for cafe racers. What people had striven for became ordinary, available, cheap, and the "cafe racer" became a mere sort-of style.

Rolling Eyes

Yeah coz some shit attempt at bodging an incorrect looking Honda is going to to look more authentic than an actual air cooled big single.

Depends on your definition of terrible bikes. I've had more fun on my Enfield than anything else I've ever ridden. Is it terrible? In a lot of ways yes, but it's endearing as hell.

The 650 Interceptor is a brilliant bike and ignoring it for snobbish reasons is a mistake.

Why? Just, why?

They weren't carrying much trimable weight in the first place, and the lack of fairing will actually make it slower.

Not so good when the whole point is to make them faster.

it's funny that someone spent quite a bit of time making that only to put 600 miles on it in 5 years Laughing I bet they realise it's shit the first time they ride it.

There's a term for bikes like the Enfield . . . ones with character. Subtle (or sometimes not so subtle) shortcomings and peculiarities are what makes these bikes interesting to own and ride compared with a metronomic machine that is smooth, predicatable, linear etc.. probably the ultimate example of such are things like Cubs with their odd front suspension yet are immensely popular.

I personally think the new Enfields look superb; not ridden one but I can imagine pootling down the country lanes, stopping off for a pub lunch etc. and just soaking it all in they'd be awesome.

Just buy a standard one then. Will be a much nicer proposition than one that has been tastelessly customised.
