Wow, not only is that seat stupidly small it appears to angle downward as if to maximise the chance of the rear wheel making the rider a Eunuch.

Also the shit looking fold in the seat cover makes me wonder if he can't even cover a seat, the rest must be proper grim.

Mate I was literally about to comment something similar. I have no idea why people get these stupidly small seats: they look shite.

This,,, thing...... has a "one off frame"
for a piffling £2750 you can be the next proud owner of a machine that may never get past an mvsa inspection.

Why would someone do that you ask?

Another costly catalog of instances of poor decision-making while under the influence. Don't like how that seat is held on with a couple of bolts, or how the rear shock mounts appear to be aluminium-welded to the swingarm.
Just look at all those spare parts in the second picture. Serial bike vandal.

Incidentally
I've just seen that CX on Gumtree
"Honda CX500 Cafe Racer Reduced price as I need to sell
£2,250.00"
and

"Reduced price as I need to sell
£2.450 now dropped price again
to £2.250
A lot of bike seeing as its fully restored for someone."

I wonder how bad that ride of 4 miles must have been.

If it were just the seat, he could change that. After all, so much time has already been wasted on painting.
I suspect it runs like crap. Pods plus straight pipes. It can be set up, but it takes a long time and can be frustrating. So that was 4 miles trying not to slip onto the rear tyre, the thing sounding like a pneumatic drill as it lurched, bogged, stalled and surged as the engine warmed up under load and showed up what a mess the fuelling was. Then he was cured of his cafe phase. Just a hunch.

Yeah, I'm 'doing up'* my old rusty Hornet and was looking into ditching the airbox and fitting pods after spending too much time on 'Pipeburn' and 'Bike Exif', I soon realised that fitting pods was way beyond my carburettors and fuelling skillset so I ditched the idea. Also Honda had spent sh*t loads of money paying experts to design an airbox and get the fuelling just right for the bike - so the idea that I could just wade in and achieve satisfactory results with pods was laughable.

*I was gonna say 'resto-mod' but bottled it Mr. Green .

On a Hornet, it's asking for trouble because it's a 4-cylinder bike with a specially designed airbox, and CV carbs that depend on that pressure from the airbox.
It can definitely be done with success on older bikes like a CX500. However, I think most people try to just go up and down pilot and main jet sizes. Unfortunately, it's rarely that simple. I suspect the cafe lot just keep going up in jet sizes until the bike runs. Then, of course, after a little while it will show symptoms of rich running, it will bog, etc. In that CX500 ad he says he's gone with such-and-such pilot and main jet, which just sound BIG. No mention of needle jet choice, throttle needle choice, clip height, etc. So I doubt it's right. [EDIT: it definitely isn't right, as I see he's using the original CV carbs]

I've been forced to use a pod filter on my project bike, because the old carburettors were destroyed and the airbox was missing. So I went down the 2-into-1 route. Even setting that up (i.e. single carb, single pod, standard exhausts) wasn't straightforward. Wasn't rocket science but it was a nuisance. I wouldn't like to try it on an 4-cylinder bike.

Yeah, totally right. The minute I started to comprehend the complexity and issues whch you describe above regarding 4 cylinders I realised that I didn't have anything like the expertise required to set the carbs up properly with pod filters and it wasn't worth the time, hassle etc for something that was essentially an aesthetic choice rather than a technial necessity or improvement.

As you say, it's questionable if it's even possible to achieve the same broad level of performance and efficiency with pods that is supplied by the original purpose built airbox designed by Honda.

Pod filter sounds like a much more viable proposition on your project. Very Happy

I see that CX is up to £1,420 with 2 hours to go so there's obviously
still a market for magic beans.

I'm genuinely mystified who buys this shit

Just insured my 79er and Carol Nash asked if it was
substantially standard (ie non silly mods) which it is.
These cafe racer nobs must be lying their arses off.

I'd say substantial mods would include butchering the rear frame
for a pointless monoshock which is no improvement at all and
potentially dangerous in fact.
I cant see how they qualify for VHI either.

I'd say without MVSA approval this mod is not fit for the road
so it's just as well most of these types will do anything but
get on and ride them.

You have to declare mods for your insurance, but I very much doubt that the cafe lot ever do.

Rather more concerning is the abuse of the MSVA regs. Frame modification demands MSVA, always. The system and criteria are very clear. These people threaten to ruin the nice and lax regulatory framework we currently have in place for historical vehicles. These contraptions bring too much attention. Those of who own qualifying historic vehicles rely on flying under the radar of the privileged elite. The tax and MOT exemption was only ever put in place for the benefit of people with classic Ferraris who meet up once a year. It wasn't ever intended for a scruffy enthusiast with a Caterham kit car or a CX500. So the attention the likes of Bike Shed, etc. with their dubious mods brought is a serious negative.

Here are 2 car events coming up in the near future:

https://www.stonor.com/events/bremont-stonor-supercar-sunday/
https://www.berkshiremotorshow.co.uk/

The 40 year exemption was achieved following lobbying at an EU level, and it was meant to allow the former car event to proceed as it's always done, and not the second one.

Can't blame it all on the cafe lot, as the car lot are even worse, with dangerous deathtraps relying on nostalgia to pull in e-donations on Youtube (e.g. those Rover P6s falling to pieces).

At the end of the day, these people are using a bandwagon as a stepping stone, so they're going to move on. Whether onto e-bikes or just the attractiveness of wealth, i.e. a new and shiny car when they no longer need to e-beg. But I think it needs to be happening more quickly than it is, or else, at the current rate, the regulations might be tightened.
