On a Hornet, it's asking for trouble because it's a 4-cylinder bike with a specially designed airbox, and CV carbs that depend on that pressure from the airbox.
It can definitely be done with success on older bikes like a CX500. However, I think most people try to just go up and down pilot and main jet sizes. Unfortunately, it's rarely that simple. I suspect the cafe lot just keep going up in jet sizes until the bike runs. Then, of course, after a little while it will show symptoms of rich running, it will bog, etc. In that CX500 ad he says he's gone with such-and-such pilot and main jet, which just sound BIG. No mention of needle jet choice, throttle needle choice, clip height, etc. So I doubt it's right. [EDIT: it definitely isn't right, as I see he's using the original CV carbs]
I've been forced to use a pod filter on my project bike, because the old carburettors were destroyed and the airbox was missing. So I went down the 2-into-1 route. Even setting that up (i.e. single carb, single pod, standard exhausts) wasn't straightforward. Wasn't rocket science but it was a nuisance. I wouldn't like to try it on an 4-cylinder bike. |

Yeah, totally right. The minute I started to comprehend the complexity and issues whch you describe above regarding 4 cylinders I realised that I didn't have anything like the expertise required to set the carbs up properly with pod filters and it wasn't worth the time, hassle etc for something that was essentially an aesthetic choice rather than a technial necessity or improvement.
As you say, it's questionable if it's even possible to achieve the same broad level of performance and efficiency with pods that is supplied by the original purpose built airbox designed by Honda.
Pod filter sounds like a much more viable proposition on your project. |

You have to declare mods for your insurance, but I very much doubt that the cafe lot ever do.
Rather more concerning is the abuse of the MSVA regs. Frame modification demands MSVA, always. The system and criteria are very clear. These people threaten to ruin the nice and lax regulatory framework we currently have in place for historical vehicles. These contraptions bring too much attention. Those of who own qualifying historic vehicles rely on flying under the radar of the privileged elite. The tax and MOT exemption was only ever put in place for the benefit of people with classic Ferraris who meet up once a year. It wasn't ever intended for a scruffy enthusiast with a Caterham kit car or a CX500. So the attention the likes of Bike Shed, etc. with their dubious mods brought is a serious negative.
Here are 2 car events coming up in the near future:
https://www.stonor.com/events/bremont-stonor-supercar-sunday/
https://www.berkshiremotorshow.co.uk/
The 40 year exemption was achieved following lobbying at an EU level, and it was meant to allow the former car event to proceed as it's always done, and not the second one.
Can't blame it all on the cafe lot, as the car lot are even worse, with dangerous deathtraps relying on nostalgia to pull in e-donations on Youtube (e.g. those Rover P6s falling to pieces).
At the end of the day, these people are using a bandwagon as a stepping stone, so they're going to move on. Whether onto e-bikes or just the attractiveness of wealth, i.e. a new and shiny car when they no longer need to e-beg. But I think it needs to be happening more quickly than it is, or else, at the current rate, the regulations might be tightened. |
