I've had to get a new log book and registration for my 1971 Puch Maxi, and I cannot work out if I'm eligible for MOT exemption. The reissue certificate has the date of first registration as 2023, and in the special notes section, it is declared manufactured in 1971. Also, the taxation class is down as a historic vehicle. The DVLA website says that for a vehicle to be exempt, it needs to have been built or first registered more than 40 years ago. What's confusing me is that the date of first registration is November 14, 2023, so does this mean I have to get a MOT?

If its registered as historic for tax then its exempt from MOT. I honestly wouldnt worry about it because any cop with the slightest degree of common sense would understand what youve just said, built OR registered over 40 years ago. Any copper that doesnt have that common sense would get laughed out of court for not reading the legislation.

As virus says, this is the important fact. I had to go to the Post Office and get the V5c changed to this effect when one of mine passed 40 years old. Once you've got that, you're all good - exempt from MOT and £0 VED*.

*Don't forget that you're not exempt from VED, you just pay it at a rate of £0, so you need to remember to tax/SORN every year or DVLA will shaft you... ask my mate how he knows this Laughing
