Hi all

This is my first post.

I wonder if people would consider a road worthy but aged classic like the Honda C 50 rather than a new modern scooter for their daily commute to a station/work place and leisure pursuits?

There are not many left ?

Regards

Cobo

Yes, I bought one for my son's 16th.
Big wheels. sprung emgine, is 'not' a scoooter, iys a step-thru notorbike.
Some bits scarse, but so much standard pit-bike, so much is available, new, off the sjelf and with probabblt less faff tham a cinky-bike....
Only, why restrict yourtself to the 50? Why not a 70, or the classic 90 un;ess you are 16?

As Teffers said, why restrict yourself to the 50?

Many moons ago I had a C90 and loved it.
It was unburstable and went on forever.

If I was in the market for that sort of bike, a C90 would be on the short list.

I would take three guesses...
1/ Only 16 and not legally allowed anything bigger
s/ over 16, but with 'car' driving licence and grandad rights with 'full moped' entitlement so no CBT or L's..... (Bit like smoking,. it may be 'legal' but that alone dont mean its a great idea!)
3/ Its 'Onlee' a Fiftee! Its not a monster mega-bike, so easier to get past 'management'.. which begs the question, would 'management' be able to tell the difference between a 50, 709 and 90, or even any of them and a ham-sandwich, anyway.. and more.. provided it didn't look like something off 'Byker-Boyz'... would they really care?

On which topic, I have to say that No! Sons's C50, remains one of THE most scary bikes I have ever ridden... so light, so short, and so inherently unstable, despite the larger wheels... it just seemed to go anywhere and every where but where I needed it to... especially riding down the Somme Battlefield, sorry Corporation Macaddam to my local MOT man! But then again.. I had hammered the old Series III Land-Rover around the green-lanes of Wales & Derbyshire, without doing any harm to it.. and broke a suspension leaf-spring on the dang thing on that stretch or err, I use the term loosely, VERY loosely 'Road'!!! They have re-roughened it since then too! And blame Severn-Trent Water and the gas board!

Buy the C50 anyway, if you want a nice restoration project as a hobby. Everyone likes to see Honda Cubs. They bring back memories.

If you just want a commuter machine to get you from A to B and back every day, a modern scooter would suit you better.

From what I recall of my old C90, there were occasional carb troubles, not helped by my ignorance (at the time) of how carbs even work. The brakes were too weak, and the odd design of the front suspension caused strange behaviour at times. Rust eats these bikes quickly but isn't always visible, so an old, neglected one used as a workhouse and left out in the rain might develop a dangerous condition. The C90 was fun in its own way though. Really liked the speedo and solid, well put-together feel of the bike.

If you decide to go for an old Honda Cub, beware anything that's been abused, been fed car oil, etc.

I've always said I'll be a biker until the day I can't cope with a C90, although I'm getting the feeling I should buy one soon and store it, by the time it's all I can handle, I won't be able to afford one!

Best. Bike. Ever.
While you're on a commute to the station find yourself an old railway trackbed or a colliery spoil heap - they will not break the bike.

The early “big block” Honda 90’s with the points driven from the camshaft are far superior to the later “cub” type which are basically an oversize 50/70. I’d quite like one, they can do 55mph and are well engineered.

Hi guys many thanks for the comments. There does appear to be a bit of nostalgia and feeling for the old Honda C range.

I have a vision of trying to bring a few back on the road here in sussex and in particular pounding the roads of brighton and Hove. Just imagine how cool it would be owning and riding such a machine along the sea front (slowly)with your girl on the back in the summer time. Easy to ride, park 19 road tax and traffic beating. And on a machine that will appreciate (if looked after)

I will soon have a small fleet of 5 (various) models including the perfect C90 (great for the more robust commute) and will be getting them serviced and moted. Will then hopefully sell the dream !

I will let you know how I get on.

Ps I am 55 retired held a full motorcycle licence since 1984 but havent been near a bike for many years.

Aside, would these be legal for a 16 year old now? "Back in the day" they weren't mopeds as they didn't have pedals. And they weren't explicitly speed restricted, as required by later moped definitions.

C50M is a moped. It's also quicker to cycle everywhere.

We have a restored NC50 Express and a pretty much mint C90 - i'd take the 90 over the 50 without a doubt.

It's just a better thing to ride.

I wouldn't leave mine parked at the station
They are very nickable, which is a shame ,I bought a Riders c110 cub in the end to leave parked up
They occasionally come up for sale ,Honda clone with a 110 engine ,under £700 normally

First bike I bought after finally getting my licence back (after 4 years) at 21.
Bought it cos I'd driven several over at a the local waste ground, one particular C50 had an annoying oil leak, so in anger I took every single piece of metal off the engine, let all the oil run out and took it back over the fields. It took three days before the cams rattled so hard that the resonance stopped it accelerating much past fast idle. Limped it back to my parents back garden.
My anger now subdued, I put all the covers back on, taking a bit more care with the gaskets, topped it up with oil, and it was fine for another slaughtering over the field.
It was that incident that convinced me to get one from new.. You cant got wrong with a C50...they're bullet proof, at least IMO the older ones were.
