yes i get there's rules, but surely it would be an advisory as its a non danger item..

Just spend a tenner on a legal one that you fit for MOTs.

Indeed. Take a bike in for its ticket you know is going to fail and expect tester to pass it - well, that's asking him to risk his job for you; however little risk you think there is to it.

VOSA or Trading Standards probably told all the local places to stick to ze rules. They do occasional purges.

When I book the Kawasaki in I always ask whether I need to put the OE can on. Most times it's no unless there's been a cautionary letter recently. It's not much bother to me, although I did have to get the OE can from a breakers years ago because the Remus came with the bike.

My neighbour is a police motorcyclist but his own bike has a small plate and twin Yoshimuras.

your assuming I knew the plate was wrong. I didnt. it passed every mot its ever had, and i was told if a new plate was fitted, it certainly doesnt look new. i drove 15 miles to get it tested so if id known would have avoided having to re visit.

that seems to be the case, but i am surprised its not an advisory as its non dangerous. thanks for the helpful input.

Advisory? You are either following the rules regarding reg plate or not.

There are no grey areas involved. It's not like brake pads being worn near the limit.

like i said, I didnt know the plate was a few mm's out. Advisory's exist so why is it a shock i suggest this could be one? its not something likely to cause a danger to me or other road users.

look forward to some of you winging you have MOT issues this year as most replies here on this are just negative for the sake of it.
its 3 mm on the bottom of a number plate ffs.

The construction and use regs are fairly straightforward and are can be found in many places on the internet. Stop being butthurt because you pushed the boundaries and found out where the limits are. Bullshit you didn’t know that plate was borderline.

Advisorys exist to warn you about things that will become unroadworthy/illegal in the fuiture but are fine now.

Your number plate was illegal, therefore it failed.

Yes, they also take "mystery shopper" bikes with deliberate faults to MOT stations.

My local guy got had by one where they'd taken the o-ring out from under the petrol filler cap. That's now a "Major, Dangerous" fault where you wouldn't legally be allowed to ride the bike home.

Isn’t there more pages in the mot rules about number plates than brakes or is that an old wives tale?

The place I’ve started using (post house move) had just had a fisting for not picking up on a number plate light not working. It’s not really a surprise that when I turned up on a bike that was close to the line on a few things he had to fail me when my number plate light was buggered. It’s a black and white issue, it works or it doesn’t, hence you pass or you don’t. He couldn’t have been more helpful in helping me get it sorted, I now use there and there alone and he is now more ‘pragmatic’ now he knows I’m not a mystery punter. The rules are pretty clear, he followed them.
Your bloke had / has no reason to stick his neck out for a person he didn’t know, especially so soon after an inspection by VOSA. You can’t blame him...

My local place the first time I called for an MOT he said right off "Your bike has a legal plate doesn't it? If it doesn't then don't bring it for MOT coz if it's not 100% legal it'll fail."

I've been using him for years now and he's always sound but at the time he had been given a shoe-ing for it by VOSA because a bike he had recently MOT'd got a pull and the rider said "It passed the MOT like it mate".

Totally with the OP on this one. If the lettering is standard size, who cares if the margin is 3mm off? If you can spot that at 10-15 metres away at 60mph then good on ya ...

Well I took my 612 bullet in for an MOT on Thursday. It has a smart aluminium "show plate" on but I took it off and put the manky old standard plate back on for the test.
