Ok, my Suzuki Address 110cc scooter is starting to drag a bit now...
Yea, I love it and it is reliable. But going down a dual carriageway daily at 43mph whenever the wind is against me sucks.
Ye, somedays I can get to 55mph but I am really slow. Mr. Green

I've done over 4000 miles on it now and I am getting tired of it. The great thing about it though is that I can just wheel it in the house so people can not steal it from my drive.

I am thinking of getting a cheap motorcycle that is heavy AF. So, I can park it on my drive and it is pretty hard to steal.
Yea I know, any motorcycle can be stolen but I parked my R1150GS on my drive for years without issue yet when I had my CBR600RR I was paranoid as fuck that someone would steal it.

So I am thinking get another R1150GS or maybe a Varadero XK1000V?
My budget is about £2500 so it is gonna be a high mileage one but I know both bikes are quite bulletproof.
I could go silly and get a Pan european or Goldwing but I think I'd look pretty stupid riding to work on them.

What do you think?
Wouldn't mind a this varadero tbh.
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/202001146166036?postcode=ss132be&advertising-location=at_bikes&seller-type=trade&sort=price-asc&radius=20&page=4

I know these are heavy as hell as well. 250kg wet weight.

My thinking is.. It is old, ugly, heavy so less likely to get stolen but also the bitch can shift on the roads. (I suspect it is much like the GS with a heck of a lot of low end grunt).

Wouldnt mind a Bandit 1250 or a FZ1 either but they do appeal to the yobos.... So maybe not.

The weight is irrelevant if the bike can be profitably sold on by thieves. 2 blokes in a van, next thing you know the bike's off to Poland. Buy the bike you want and give it a tracker, alarm, lock and chain and a cover. Or make a ramp out of some scrap wood and wheel your CBR inside.

I can almost pick up my DT like a push bike. Any normal road bike, even some 125s, are gonna be >150kg. If someone can bench-press a CBR600RR fecking let them have it!

To add to my esteemed colleagues comments: a ground anchor + 16mm chain is gonna take >10mins + several cutting disks to get through. Add on disk and U locks and the potential thief has about a half hours hard graft ahead of them.

"If it's not bolted down..."

The weight is completely relevant.
Bike thiefs in my area are yobs with a screwdriver.
They target Peds, Scooters and bikes that are easy to move.

If I get a CBR it will have to come inside daily, I know from experience that gets old fast.

We all know a bike thief given a choice will always choose the easiest bike to steal and stealing a Varadero 1000 is not as easy as stealing a YZF R125.

Yes, I know man in a van can steal any bike given enough time but they are not the fuckers stealing bikes in my area. It's the yobs driving around with no helmets on stealing bikes that are my main concern.
I had a R1150GS on my drive for about 3 years with no issue so Mr. Green.

So what do you guys think about a high mileage Vara?

The GS used to be immune to theft before it was popular. Not any more.

Spend some money on security. Alarm and almax, somewhere solid to chain it to. All you do is try and prevent.

If they want it, they'll take it regardless.

Can you get a shed - the crims rarely steal what they can’t see and are inherently lazy so they’d go for a easier / obvious target?

I think no one stole my Varadero because it was so filthy they would have feared catching something.

Cover your property in this type of poster and be seen to cough a lot, especially on the handle bars....

A heavy bike will do nothing to prevent theft.

There's plenty more examples like this.

On the odd occasion when i have left mine at the front overnight, it was locked with a chain on each wheel to some railings, a cable type and padlock on each wheel to the railings and disk lock on each wheel, then a cover over it and held down with bungees and finally the alarm set, maybe overkill but the slightest movement will set the alarm off and i have some very good neighbours that aren't afraid to waive a heavy stick around Thumbs Up

It's an old cliche but true that if someone really want to nick it, they will.

Make it too much hassle for the joy riders and oppertunists and unless you have something like a high end Ducati your are going to be pretty safe.

High end bike? Big dog, tracker, alarm, bigger dog, crossbow, etc.

A can't quite work out how a YBR125 bolted down with 16mm chain links is easier to steal than a litre bike. Please explain Wink

Less desirable bikes? Ultimately you'd end up with some rusting, ugly heap which you wouldn't want to ride yourself. Probably anything >30 years old that isn't a rare model or a sport bike. Thieves will go for easy, sporty, new or expensive... aren't those the names of Spice Girls or something Thinking

That's the idea. Cheap litre bike that is ugly as fuck with scabby paint and covered in dirt. But, reliable.

You guys seem to be ignoring the central premise that I stated. I accept that a guy in a van can steal my bike. That's not what concerns me though. As the probability in my area for that is quite low.

I should do a fucking social experiment to prove it to you guys. I'll buy a BMW 1150GS and park it on my drive with a lock along with my Suzuki address which weighs all of 95kg.
I bet I know which one will get knicked.

Shed is not practical so using my power of psychology and understanding of the criminal mind to prevent bike theft or to at least minimise it.

You know, something like this

I want them to look at it and go, "na bruv" "na mate" "Shit is not lit init" "I'll look like a right mong on that bike bruv"

I do accept though that purposefully buying a shitty bike is a pretty unorthodox approach to preventing bike theft. Mr. Green
I'm in Essex though.

Maybe slap a 'coronovirus survivor' sticker on the tank will help as well.

They stole my Varadero because it was there. They couldn't start it (HISS) they couldn't even get the locks off (ABUS) but the damage they caused trying wrote the bike off.

One small thing that would help would be to make the steering lock more robust, just by making the locking pin a few millimeters thicker and a stronger metal would reduce many opportunist thefts or the Scrote thefts.

BMW K Series works for me. Scrotes have no interest in them. Easy to run, shaft drive, plenty of cheap parts from the likes of Motorworks. And to my eye they are much tastier than a Varadero. But each to his own.

Do people still put bikes in vans? Thought it was one on the stolen bike, one on a moped pushing it along with their left foot on the stolen bikes right pillion peg. That's how they did my R1 and a few other bikes around the same area.

Best thing you can do is put a ground anchor in place, one with the rawl bolts under the tyre when it's in place. My lockup recently got broken into and I bought a garage defender (hindsight, eh?). It's enough of a visual deterrent to put 99% of chancers off.

To be fair, that sometimes defeats the legitimate owners as well.

Hmm that looks to be quite a desirable 70s 400/4 with the bonus of a rare king/queen seat that can be re-purposed or sold off. Powerwash and a wipe with an oily rag and the hipster cafe brigade will have your arm off..

Get some old jeans and mix up some lacquer with a touch of yellow paint. Apply a little to the seat, jump on and really work it like ya got worms or summit. Continue until desired effect is reached...

A suspicious stain that looks sticky Sick
