Sounds like fuel starvation. You hearing the pump prime when you turn it on?

It does sound like fuel starvation,
Is it the carb version or fuel injection?

Fuel injection wouldn't hit until 2008. Could be timing's slipped, shit or water in the carb, dodgy coil/lead etc. Don't think it's early enough for the emergency start ignition position, which was very hit or miss on my ex's 350.

How is it for compression?

Battery charged? (they don't run well on a very flat battery). Getting good deflection on the ammeter when you turn it over?

Ignition timing would probably be my next concern. Faulty condenser can also cause such issues.

No harm in cleaning the carb out although it's probably an electrical problem. The rubber type intake manifolds can split after a while which would help nothing.

Get a proper mikuni one (the mikcarb is a licenced copy of a mikuni VM28).

Hitchcocks sell them.

The plugs a bit black & sooty, running a bit rich? Is there an adjustment on the carb? Thanks.

What sort of carb? Mikcarb or Amal?

In either case, some how-to sheets here:

That looks like a Mikcarb - a copy of the Mikuni VM28 which funnily enough I seem to have on my old DT Smile

Might want to report back with the main jet size and the needle's clip position.

Oh, and cable ties aren't a great way to secure hoses. I would suggest getting a jubilee clip or similar.

As above, standard mikcarb. They are generally pretty reliable.

A black plug CAN be running rich. It can also be burning oil.

There is a jetting guide for mikcarbs on this page:

How snug is that boot on there with the cable tie? looks like its not quite home, possible leak?

In fairness, they run acceptably well with no air filter on at all. The "airbox" is effectively a big rectangular steel box often referred to as a "tea caddy" and the filter is a huge paper element affair. There is no real contribution to carburettion efficiency, it's purely there to stop small mammals and birds being sucked into the carburettor. If anything, an air leak there would make it run lean.

From the state of it though, I suppose a blocked air filter could be restricting air flow and make it run rich.

The boot is on tight, I'll check the air filter, thanks.
