When addinf memory to my laptop do i have to put a matched pair of 8gb cards in or just any other make of cards in each slot? Can i stick one size card in one slot and another suze card in the second slot?

I reckon you first need to know how much memory the mobo will handle
then a matched pair adding up to this max amount will perform better than an unmatched pair.
An unmatched pair will probably work but it may be limited to the
speed of the slower one.

Exactly this. A pair will definitely give you better performance, but unless you're gaming, you're unlikely to notice.

The better performance from having more ram available will outweigh the slight latency/throughput issues of having an unmatched pair though.
