I got my first NIP for the bike recently, for doing 40 on a road that should be 40 (dual carriageway, main road into town, used to be 40), and I had mistakenly forgot was a 30. My only other NIP was a very long time ago, 30 days after getting my first car. Two spread over 200k+ miles..

So I was offered a speed awareness course. Fair enough - never done one, booked it and paid. Due to coronavirus they are now all cancelled, and they said would be refunded when I checked last week. However police are sneaky sods it looks like they have withdrawn the offer of any courses, to avoid refunds. This is looking like I will need to pay twice and take points. No communication - hence my post.

Anyone know what is going on here?

I'd wait and see what communication you get and then take it from there. Everyone's a bit busy sorting important shit out at the moment. (40 in a 30 is lucky for an awareness course.)

Agreed. I've been caught for speeding about 6 times over the last 14 years and every time I've been going too fast to be offered the speed awareness course. Never done one.

But yeah all you can do is wait for further communication and have your excuses ready. Fight it tooth and nail don't let them pull your pants down just because of their inability to process your paperwork. You never know it might fall through the cracks and get forgotten about because too much time has elapsed on their side Thinking

Should you really be on a bike if you obs are poor?

They sent a letter that all booked courses are withdrawn and will be refunded, with no further action being taken, but yet to see the refund.

I've never been caught by a static camera or a speed van in a layby. Once by a body with a laser gun hiding behind a private van in a layby at night. All other times have been SP50s on the motorway by unmarked police following from behind. With the best obs in the world there's not much you can do about that but nowadays I do generally tend to get a bit paranoid if I see another vehicle following me at the same speed without overtaking or falling behind for a set amount of time so whenever that happens I usually pull in a lane and slow down to let the matching speed vehicle pass. I think I've calmed down a lot in the last few years but generally I won't speed 'a bit'. I'll either be in what I like the call 'the prosecution safety zone' (between +0% and +10%) or I'll be going flat out but no more than 50% over the limit or 30mph over the limit whichever is lowest (i.e 29 in a 20, 44 in a 30, 59 in a 40, 74 in a 50, 89 in a 60 or 99 in a 70) but that's on very rare occasions and only if I'm REALLY late for something and it's imperative I make up time.

I just don't see the point in doing 36mph in a 30. You don't actually get anywhere quicker but carries the same risk as doing 44 so what's the point? One could argue it's easy to creep over the speed limit without realising but personally I think that's worse as it proves you're not paying attention to your speed. I've never been able to claim I wasn't aware I was speeding whenever I've been caught Embarassed

20, 30, 40... stay close. 50? Why a 50, normally a good 60 road desrestricted for spurious 'crashes have happened' or 'safety r6easons'. Anything else should be ridden at a speed that's safe for that road.

I agree. Generally I ride or drive to what I feel safe for the road type and conditions. Those numbers quoted above are maximums, not targets Very Happy

LOL

I should also mention that at the time I was doing 100k to 120k a year so it kinda becomes an occupational hazard at that point as I figure I've done about 1.2 million miles since 2006 :-/
