Hi all, I hope you are all keeping safe with the current situation.

My grandfather is not in good health and his months are numbered. I know the bike isn't a real classic nor is it worth thousands, but it has significant sentimental value.

He has given me his 1979 Jawa 350 that he used to ride from Portsmouth to Essex every weekend to see my grandmother. The bike came with a mountain of every spare part but unfortunately not all of it is in the best condition.

Anyway! I want to restore her to her former glory but have come into 2 issues...

I have completely dismantled the motorbike but am struggling to remove the swing arm bolt and also I don't know how to remove the head steering bearing, I have removed the large nut but I don't know what next.

Can anyone shed some light on how to remove the swing arm bolt, I have removed both nuts but the bearing won't budge.

If you would like pictures of what I mean please ask, I have attached a picture of the bike.

Thank you all.

The bearing will probably be interference fit, so you might need to heat up the swing arm and frame with a blowtorch and then knock out the bearing with a drift. Make sure there are no circlips or similar holding it in.

Knowing Jawa etc there probably is not but it's worth checking.

The pivot just drifts out. It could be well just be stuck!

The manual remcommends drifting it out with a hammer and aluminium drift.

I'd suggest putting one of the nuts most of the way back on and whaling on it with a deadblow hammer through a hardwood block to see if you can get it moving initially. Squirt lots of penetrating oil about.

If you PM me an email address, I have a scan of the original workshop manual for a slightly later model (I think the next one up). The chassis and much of the engine will be similar but the electrics are different. It's too big a file to attach here.

That looks in good condition. It's always tinwork/plastics that are hard to find. Good luck.

Pictures of the parts you're dealing with are also useful.

In many respects they are 2 175 singles 'nailed' together. I would think pistons, etc along with electrics and cycle parts would have considerable commonality between the 175 and the three and a half.
Yours looks a particularly nice example . There are some UK made parts > The rear light is the same as a Meriden Bonneville! A good soaking in penetrating oil and a bit of time helps everything come apart ( some patience helps too).

Great little bike Thumbs Up

It’s never gonna be a super1000bhp, but it will get you about!

Go for it, fix it up and give it a new lease of life.

Actually, they are a fucking horrible bike. I should know, I've had three of them.

I think that's also the model that was mainly responsible for their terrible reputation with a 6v dynamo charging system and random output autolube system. If it's the one I think it is, it may even have a grease nipple on the front of the engine to lube the centre main bearing through.

There are quite a lot of neat pieces of design let down almost entirely by a combination of crap materials and poor build-quality.

All that said, even a broken clock is right twice a day so the fact it's still mostly in one piece by now means they must have accidentally made one that roughly works as it was designed to.

They have character.

I was given this one by a bike shop to stop it making their showroom look untidy. Even dropped it off at my house.

I was robbed!

Err? They’re fucking horrible, but you had three? Thinking

Yeah thinking about that, I had three Yamaha XS’s and they were all pants.

The first one was £300 (complete with a sidecar and 600 miles on the clock) and all I could afford. The second was £80 from an autojumble. The third was free.

I mean, a free motorbike? Delivered to my house... Should've held out for a full tank of fuel with it.

Anyway, I own a VFR750 so I need to find something to do in the workshop. Hence two royal enfields in my stable. Those are as bad as Jawas but in different ways.
