So what item in a kitchen would fit that description? A metal tray, a metal plate, a metal cup or bowl?

Probably all of those, I've been known to stick a spoon in porridge to prevent localised superheating.

I should probably add that the 'no metal' warning is to prevent people from putting things that would cause arcing and possible damage. It's easier to say "Don't" than to say "These are ok, these are not"

As for racks "tuned to the metal in the cavity" Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

They're safe because they're rounded.

Unbelievable. They say electric charge doesn't strike twice, but here we now have not one, but two threads where mpd displays a fantastic lack of knowledge on how EM waves work!

Oh. I thought standing waves were normal in microwave ovens, hence the need for a turntable (or rotating reflector in old-fashioned ones).

Its more to ensure that whatever's cooking gets an even distribution of energy although standing waves do feature in the oven cavity. The microwaves are emitted from a waveguide on one side of the oven usually behind an RF transparent window that looks a bit like opaque mica. Standing waves are a feature of any RF system and are kept to a minimum to avoid damage to output devices.
