We're having issues with our boiler. We're in this Corona lockdown so we have been unable to book anyone in to fix anything. It's making a fuck load of noise, and it happens multiple times a day.

My wife has filmed the boiler making the noise.

https://youtu.be/8MsCeeeR0xk

Once you turn the hot tap on it stops.

Any ideas?

Sounds like water hammer. Something may need bleeding. As to why... is it over pressure?

Edit: Have you done anything to the pipework/taps/stopcock or anything?

I had this a few months ago, changing the internals of the taps solved it, check to see if any of your taps drip when another tap is on, it was my basin taps and would drip when the kitchen taps were turned on Thumbs Up

On the contrary, judging by the gauge... possibly it might help if you filled it to normal working pressure? (about 1.0 bar or something?)

Can't read the gauge, what does it say? Should be 1-2 bar hot at a guess. The manual will say. If it's much over pressure his pressure release valve will operate which he does not want to happen.

Nor can I but it's obviously at the very bottom of its range, ie a gnat's away from the boiler cutting out I'd say

As above, if that's a pressure guage at the top right, it usually wants to be at about 1 bar.

There wil be a fillng procedure for the pressure vcssel. Usually involves attaching a filling loop (although many are left attached anyway) and opening a couple of quarter-turn taps to add mains water to the pressure vessel.

You may need to bleed the system afterwards. In my house, I wait an hour and most of the air seems to land up in one upstairs radiator.

That's the valliant eco tec pro.

Can't help you with that strange noise but you could do with adding a bit more water into the system judging by the reading on that round gauge.
Look for a loop with a small quarterturn tap on it.
It'll only take a second or so to raise the pressure to something like in this pic.

Also looks like you could save some money by turning the comfort setting off. It's why the boiler kicks in every now and again in.

Should be no green light when boiler isn't working.
Turn dial with tap on it to minimum. hold it there for a few seconds then turn it back up to almost max....or wherever.

I’ll give that a go tomorrow. I assumed the water pressure was the number on the digital reading. Kept it at 1.5 on that. When I add more pressure in that number goes up.

Thanks for responses I’ll give it another look in the morning

So what's the guage at the top right?

Is that gauge not just for the central heating system, nothing to do with hot water supply to the sinks/bath.

top it up,

then bleed if needed

Just topped the system up so gauge on the right is showing mid way between full and empty. I honestly hadn't even noticed the gauge until you pointed it out (little embarrassed by that), I saw originally that filling the system changed the digital readout so I just left that at 1.5bar and didn't think any more about it. It's now reading 2.3 bar.

I just tried bleeding the radiators and they have no air in them so that seems fine.

@Howling Terror: You mentioned turning the comfort setting off. How do you sort that? Cheers

Is it still making weird noises? (I have no advice to give I'm just being polite).

Comfort setting is where the boiler fires-up and pre-heats a small amount of water so in theory you have instant hot water. Reality for me is downstairs it still has to push out that cold water in the pipe before the hot arrives.

The big dial top left with tap symbol + and -

Turn it all the way anti-clockwise. Hold for a couple of seconds then turn up the dial noting the degree setting in the display. Maximum temp for hot water is 65 which is also when the comfort setting kicks back in so aim for something before.

Now we've got the noise sorted we can look at heating maintenance.
You need to flush the system using a proprietary flushing solution.
Then flush that lot out using fresh water.
Then add an inhibitor.
May I recommend a pump noise solution too?

Look at the fernox website.

You may have inhibitor in the system.
Test by dribbling some heating water into a clear glass jar and leave a steel nail in it.
If you have inhibitor then the nail will not rust. If no inhi9you will see rust forming within a day or two.

Rust and heating system bad.
It create gas which can cause noise by displacing the water.
Other stuff like sludge to slow circulation and fouling the boiler tubes too.
