Saw another thread by some moaner who seems obsessed with his secret shame about being English, so here's one for the rest of us.

Happy St George's Day Very Happy

And for the sake of adding discussion to the thread:

What are people's thoughts on a British national day? We don't have one.

Rather than disparate George/Andrew/Patrick/David days, I've always preferred the idea of one big day when everyone gets their union jacks out and celebrates how great the United Kingdom is.

I think this would be a good idea but can't speak for the Welsh/Scottish/Irish.

I seem to remember there was some reluctance to form a combined football team in the 2012 Olympics.

I'm not a fan of rabid nationalism, but I think a wee bit of flag waving and national unity may well help the nation heal recent wounds, Brexit and austerity shaped wounds in particular.

I'd certainly prefer flag worship over Dear Leader Boris Johnson worship, anyway.

We all celebrate mayday happily enough. It's also VE day this year.

And the same to you, although I must say I have never heard anyone say such a thing before! It usually just happens. When possible, I wear a red rose to mark the occasion. Many people say to me "Oh, why are you wearing a red rose?". However, it is not possible this year.

That's what the last night of the proms is for. I see no need to get pissed and lairy like the Irish or quote poetry to a lambs bladder filled with lung like the Scots.

Let's keep a bit of decorum whilst displaying our national pride.

As to what the Welsh do? No idea. Probably something to do with leaks and live sheep...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_National_Day

Great event to celebrate, already a bank holiday nearby, and good chances of decent weather for outdoor gatherings.

Nah, that's to commemorate the birthday of a famous drinker, liar, fornicator, sometime tax collector, songwriter and poet.

St Andrews day is later in the year and passes with much less ceremony.

The following may cause a bit of mouth frothing from certain sensitive folk on here but: I don't really see myself as English and don't care a great deal for St George's Day (this thread was mainly just to troll mpd Very Happy).

This may be due to half my family being Scottish so it just feels weird if I start jumping around singing about being purely English. I don't think my dad would even allow it! Laughing

As far as I'm concerned, I'm British first, Yorkshire second, and nothing else really matters.

That is a nice picture, but the flag is flying upside-down.

Gosh. I did not know that there are many of them still around. Their raison d être, begging your pardon, has been removed Their job is done. Every one of them is tired and shagged out following a prolonged squawk.

You think they must be UKIP votes because they dare show national pride? How many votes did UKIP get in these areas of your town?

UKIP didn't stand a candidate. Their activists told me at the Euros they weren't going to. How many would they get depends because the vote is split between the Tories and them. How many would be willing to vote UKIP? Maybe 30% ish.

TBP pulled candidates in most Southern areas, where they could have won. As a result, I voted independent, purely because I refused to vote for Damian "Laptop Porn" Green. In local issues, he really doesn't give a toss and has ignored all requests for help from his constituents.
