Is this right: vehicles registered as "historic" can use old-skool black & silver plates?

Why would you want black and silver number plates on a "modern classic", which did not have them in the first place? Surely it would be historically inaccurate, just like adding a pair of "smart torpedo-shaped lamps" to the headlight of anything but a 1957 AJS 500?

Well I've done some more reading and the original cut-off was 1973 and my bike's '76 so not far off. Anyhoo, it's currently black and I thought it would look kewl Smile Need a new number-plate anyway.

That’s how it reads to me - although I’m not sure what ‘you must have applied to the DVLA’

When you tax an Historic vehicle for the first time you do it at a post office who charge you zero and send off the application to DVLA for a change in tax class. The Black and Silver plates don't apply to a vehicle used for trade as that cannot be in the Historic tax class, you still have to pay VED on it.

If it no longer needs an MOT it seems unlikely you'd get pulled for it but the 1973 rule is correct.

Correct for what? Vehicles after 1973 can use black and silver plates if they are in the historic vehicle tax class.

This year i've had two vehicles that I can register as Historic, and every other year until 2031 I will be doing so for more of my own vehicles. It would be a bit expensive for me to do.

I don't think i'll bother buying new b+w plates for them though unless they happen to break.

Well yes, I should have been clearer: I was shopping for a new plate anyway. Peg it on that very, very, VERY long list of things I didn't know but felt I had to expose my ignorance about thought other people might want to know Smile

You might be able to save yourself a little from 'wankissitude' if you make it yourself from adhesive vinyl letters on a piece of scrap metal sheet gloss painted black..

BTW does anyone know if ANPR has an issue with these types of plates?

For what it’s worth I think I would swap to black and white metal plates. It’s a Yamaha RD250 on a R reg so it was one of the earlier yellow plates from purchase I think.

The amendment to the relevant legislation allowing reflective plates was passed in 1967, so they were common currency from 1968 onwards, I doubt you would find many vehicles after 1970 that left a showroom with B&W plates.

I've just put a set on a 1971 registered Rover that just about look right, but it left the showroom with reflectives, so it's no longer 'correct'.

AFAIK the pattern recognition mostly has trouble with fancy fonts. The colours or relief (for raised stick on letters) are not important, at a distance if the two colours are contrasting, i.e. black on yellow/white, white/silver on black.

However, if you could come up with a way of making a number plate look normal in visible light but blank with infra-red you might defeat some cameras... at night.

I thought I wanted black and silver on my 400four. When push came to shove, I actually prefer the look of the original over that. And the original is a shitty looking yellow board with stick on skinny letters.

Only thing I would like is correctly sized 3d plastic rivet-on letters. But I've yet to see them. Loads of car sized letters, but no bike ones. And, AND the car ones are about £50 each! Bugger that!

Love me a bit of tax- and mot-less retro fun.

Indeed. The 550/600 and teh GT 250 still have the tired 'little letter' plates they came with - legality uncertain.

Ha - almost forgotten about those.. They were on my Grandad's last car though Austin 1100. Someone is harvesting them from the scrapper and making a small fortune no doubt.

You misunderstand the word "historic".
Google, a dictionary or someone sensible may assist you.

I'm not being pedantic.
I have a BSA Bantam D7 which is registered in the historic class and can legally use aluminium and black plates.
The rest of my fleet are registered as (X) Taxation class Bicycle.

I see modern bikes with the old style plates regularly at Squire's Sherburn in Elmet.
Every owner tells me they get pulled by Plod and can be served with vehicle defect notices requiring an MoT test to get removed. Even on a new bike.
