Good day all,
I’m retired; living the good life in Morocco and Northern California. I’m happy to join your forum, and hope to be a useful contributor. Been riding since age 16. I’ve owned 20 bikes in the 51 years since then. Rode a 1962 BMW R60 for 29 years; then put 107,000 miles on a Honda PC800. My favorite bike of all time is the fifth generation Honda VFR 800. My ’98 VFR had 117,000 miles on the clock when I sold it, and my 2000 VFR had 36,000 on it when my son crashed it. Now I’ve downsized a bit (power wise) to a BMW R1150R. I’ve done all my own maintenance over the years, including electrical repairs on both VFR’s and the PC800, and hope my experience might be of value to somebody.

Last year I purchased a Yamaha YBR 125 for tooling around the country roads here in Morocco. It’s a cracking little bike, and I’m having as much fun on it than on any other bike I’ve owned. Check out this link: https://advrider.com/f/threads/riding-moroccan-backroads-on-a-yamaha-ybr-125.1378514/ There are a lot of YBR’s in the UK, which is why I joined Bike Chat Forum. There is no dedicated YBR discussion group that I’m aware of, but the BCF has some interesting YBR related content.

That’s enough for now. The UK jargon is a little foreign to me, but I’ll figure it out. Take care all. Keep the rubber side down. Peace, Jeff J.

Hello Thumbs Up .
Welcome to the forum.
One or two on here have a strange sense of humour on here , don’t be offended.

Nothing wrong with the YBR, if that’s what you like , good for you.
Many people on here have had a YBR pass through thier hands.

Morocco and California? Separate body parts or do you travel between the two locales?

Welcome. Thumbs Up YBR's are a staple diet for a lot of people here as commuters or learner machinery and have a good reputation.

Can I be nosey? Why retire to Morocco I have to ask? I admittedly don't really know Morocco but have worked in both Algeria and Egypt and I can say quite categorically that North African countries would not be high on my wish list. Laughing

Maybe I've been missing something but if my choices were Morocco or California I know where'd I'd head for!

ha ha. I guess weed is one thing northern California and northern Morocco have in common, but that's not for me. Still got all me body parts, and they all work, too. Hope to keep riding into my eighties...guess that's part of the YBR attraction for me at my age.

I dunno. I suppose if my experience was limited to North African urban cities, I might share your sentiment. But rural Morocco is quite different, really a lot like the Sierra foothills. It grows on you, there is a lot to like.

Sorry, did a sloppy job of editing a quote made by Polarbear. I love it here. JJ

Is that aimed at me?

My greatest hate is Baksheesh. Everything runs on bribes. No one takes no for an answer. Kids begging or stealing from you. Traders taking your money and saying you haven't given enough.

Bearing in mind everything was paid for by the company, when I left a ship in Port Said I had to bribe the bum boat, the custom officials, the taxi driver and the ticket clerk at Cairo airport just to pass through the smelliest sh1thole in the world, and that includes Chittagong.

Turn your back and it's stolen. Before I went to Egypt I used to begrudge giving the immigration and customs in Nigera bribes, but they were nothing like the avaricious bastards that were in Suez or Port said.

And then there was Arzew, Algeria. I was sent to get a ship released that had been interned for safety reasons. There was nothing wrong with the ship but the Captain hadn't given the harbour master his 'present' of a load of booze and fags from the bond. (In the days when ships weren't dry and smoke free obviously). I was told just to get the ship (An LNG carrier) released and had no experience of this sort of thang. I had to bribe very high up and a lot to over rule the harbourmaster. I also had to give the Captain a bollocking for 'rocking the boat' so to say even though he was totally right.

So maybe I'm biased but I can handle Sub Sahara African countries, Southern Asian sh1tholes, and South American slums but if wifie was to tell me she had booked a holiday to the Pyramids I'd say 'Bye Dear, have a nice time and is your travel/life insurance up to date.

For all I know, you might have the same experience in the port of Tangier or Casablanca, but I don't think so. My experience in Morocco has been overwhelmingly positive. Came here in the 1980's to work as a Field Engineer in the US Peace Corps. The issued me a Yamaha DT175 to get to my work sites in small mountain villages. I married my wife here, my son grew up in the streets of Rabat. The people of Morocco have treated me with respect. Rural Morocco is very different than your experience in Egypt and Algeria. I came here in retirement for the clean living, clean air, and deserted country roads. This place has been a real blessing for me.

Oh sure. Everyone has different experiences in different places and that is what focuses their feelings for a country.

I absolutely adore Venezuela. I found the people friendly and helpful and never had hassles while I was there. Others, including colleagues I have worked with wouldn't give the place the time of day.

It's all in the personal experience.
