Brake fluid is hygroscopic, so using just brake fluid on the seals increases the likelihood of corrosion in the seal recesses. Or you could say it reduces the time before corrosion starts. That's the reason I use silicone grease on the seals. I don't use red rubber grease there as I find it too sticky, silicone grease is more slimy and easier to make sure it's in all the right places without preventing the seals seating properly.

That's why I land the seals in the groove before running brake fluid around the lip.
Cleaning out the grooves that had suffered from fluid induced corrosion gave me loads of work and was almost without exception the reason pots were getting jammed up, when the seals were getting pushed out of the groove.
