Hi all

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunny weather, been googling but finding mixed answers to this, I was allegedly caught today by speed gun doing 41mph in a 30mph, what is the points and fine for this? I haven't done a speed awareness course before so hoping this is still within the range, I read that it might be upto 42mph?

Cheers
Dom

There's no fixed rules about this; it varies from area to area and is at the discretion of local police forces.
EDIT: just found my scan of the paperwork I got in 2015 from Greater Manchester Police - the threshold for eligibility then was 42mph in a 30, so you may be lucky

Send off the NiP and find out. Or google it. I think it's 10% +9MPH for a course, though that figure has just rolled out of my head so may have fuck all factual basis.

Word of warning if you take the course and think, "LOL CoronaEbola no classroom shite for me", they are doing them online I booked mine the other week. Good news earliest online course they could offer me was September Laughing

so in theory that means no points and no fine as you are booked on a course in September?

This was in South London (you would think have better things to do....),

I'd just take the fine and points rather wasting a day on one of those courses.

Correct and as the course is online I selected a training centre in Northern Ireland (I'm in Wiltshire), it was cheapest at £85.

I reckon the ££££££ right now in speeding fines must be huge. Since this shit started our unmanned police station has never had less than 6 cars parked there (which raises alot of questions itself), and 1 always has a speedgun. It's positioned perfectly you leave an NSL, enter a 30 and crest over a little hill. If you are over 30 when you come over the hill you are caught.

Smarmy tossers were on Facebook today crowing on our local groups about catching people doing mildly over the limit on an empty road, at night.

If it was just the fine I'd be with you on that but I'd rather not rack up points when I have so many vehicles insured and professionally have to keep "Good Repute". I'm lucky though I'll do it on company time and nobody will question that so not really wasting a holiday or anything.

It's a waste of a day and e points will make no difference to insurance.

Mine actually went down when I got the last 6 points for speeding.

I did the course and it was painful.

I'll be paying the fine if there's a next time.

Agreed it makes no difference but it does make you three points closer to the magic dozen!
I'd take the course without a doubt.
Apparently they're not quite as bad as they were either. I did one in about 2007 and it was rather condescending and preachy. The new ones are much better (I'm told).

I'm guessing that it would depend upon who was running the course.

Did mine 3 or 4 years ago and it was preachy and condescending.

Can't recall but suspect I rode back home like I stole it.

FWIW I'm a good boy in 30 and 40 zones. Angelic

If you get caught speeding and do the course (i.e. no points) do you still have to declare that you were caught speeding on your insurance?

Depends what question they ask, doesn't it? "Have you been convicted of a traffic offence?" - answer 'no'; "Have you been convicted of a traffic offence or done a speeding awareness course?" (and I've seen that asked) - hmmmmmm

Do the speed awareness course every time. It costs a bit more and wastes a day, but it poses no risk to your licence.

Don't ever take the points willingly because you're lowering your capacity to get away with taking the piss. Also if you're anywhere even remotely moderate risk (and not out in the sticks, like a lot of people on this forum) it WILL fuck up your insurance. Especially if you're in a city. I've had friends with 3 points have their insurance premiums double or be flat out refused renewals/no results on comparison sites.

With 3 points already in the bag, it'll only take 9 more to ban you.

It's actually quite easy to get 9 points in one go.

For example, say you have Social, Domestic, and Pleasure on your insurance policy because paying more for Commuting is just another way for insurance fat cats to scam your tits off, and you decide one day to ride your bike to work.

On your way, you 'didn't realise' you were doing 40 in a 30 and Mr Speed Gun pulls you over:

"Ello Ello, any ideas why I've pulled you over?"

"Where were you off to today then?"

"Just going to run your details and you'll be on your way."

"You said you were on your way to work, but you aren't insured to ride that vehicle to work"

"I'm reporting you for the offence of speeding and riding without insurance".

At least 3 points for speed, up to 6 points for invalid insurance.

Moral of that story, whenever plod stops you, refuse to answer where you're going, and if bullied into this or for the purposes of not rousing further suspicion into insurance fraud, make an excuse that doesn't involve work. I.e. On my way to grab a coffee.

At this point I've forgotten what your question was.

It's difficult to get 9 points for speeding.

The guidelines go 6 points and then ban.

When I was in immediate ban territory and the court gave me time off for early plea I got six points instead of a ban.

I already had 3 points for speeding at the time (I'm not taking any steeenking course) and it made absolutely no difference whether like got banned or not either as an immediate ban for the offence or under toting up.

In fact I cant think of anything that attracts 9 points. If you are habitually breaking the law to the extent that your 3rd visit to the courts had got you banned your probably just ignore the ban anyway.

I've pointed this out before, however for your delectation.

AFAIK, only Admiral ask about speed awareness courses.
The private companies that run the speed awareness courses claim they do not pass on names and details to the insurance companies.
Therefore if you told Admiral you hadn't done a course, when in fact you had, what are they going to do about it?
If it was proved that Admiral are receiving names and details from the courses, then the whole system is then exposed as a sham. There's no point in taking the course, (unless your facing a totting ban), if it still negatively affects your insurance premium.

In other news, I read somewhere, can't remember where, that certain police forces have been sending out "don't do it again" letters for people opting for awareness courses.
In the current situation they can't run the courses and can't offer an alternative for the time being.

Also, meef saying about the commuting loophole would only come up in the result of a claim, not for a check on insured or not.

Meet also isnt taking into account that these offences occurred at the same time and so the penalties are concurrent. You have to declare 3 and 6 points to your insurance but only 6 count for totting up.

I think I managed 7 points once (1 point for no l plate) but only 3 counted for totting up.
