Boxsets - great background noise in these strange times. At the moment I'm chewing through Dr Who. There's entire seasons I'm sure I haven't see before. Suffice to say it's total pap and absolutely ideal...

Unfortunately along with the actually quite surprisingly good humour and acting (moments, not the entirety) there is the crass stupidity. For example:

Martian base explodes, how dramatic! But what's this? Burning debris everywhere? How the fuck does it do that in a CO2 atmosphere?! Better to just have the debris and no fire (CGI glowing metal would have been better but budget constraints.)

And then the Doctor dons some Tony Stark bins and goes all thermal imagining... Ah! These "aliens" are reptilian as they don't show up on thermal imagining therefore cold-blooded therefore reptiles. AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH! "Cold blooded" means they don't self regulate their body heat like mammals not that their blood is really cold! How the fuck would they get anything done?!

FFS. I know Dr Who is total garbage that relies on Deus Ex Machina far too much but basic physics and biology?

So what clichés have you encountered that hit you like a brick?

This wouldn't be classed as a cliché but it's super annoying, to me anyway.

Motorcycle engine noises in pretty much any movie! I've lost count of the times I've turned to the missus with the line "well that's bullshit, that sounds nothing like a *insert bike here*".

A memorable faux pas is from the movie "Torque" (anyone remember that?!). The lead "hero" rides a Gen 1 RSV Mille but the engine sound 'aint the V60 Twin from the actual bike that's for sure!!

It would also be a silent movie at that point if you wanted to be accurate . . . name any sci-fi film/TV series (well, maybe one or two exist) where the "space shots" are silent . . . somehow passing spacecraft make a special kind of noise that's audible in a vacuum.

Regarding space it's always daft the way that, even in the remake, the ships "fly" in Battlestar Galactica Sad I blame Wing Commander. Whereas something like The Expanse tries to use the physics in the story. Bit hit or miss but they do well enough for it not to be distracting.

The word for today then is:

Verisimilitude

I feel I should re-watch 2001 . . . I have a vague recollection that Arthur was somewhat pedantic about the physics of it. I've not seen it for about 15 years so I may be talking ballcocks.

Or - half way through a race we get a shot of the hero's foot on the accelerator, which _then_ gets pushed to the floor with an accompanying surge of revs & speed, implying that they've been racing along on half throttle for the last 30 seconds.

Any film where the hero plugs a device into an enemy's computer/laptop and not only gets instant response, but it downloads at super high speed whilst the baddies are coming and they don't even try to plug it in three times, reversing each time till it finally goes in.

I mean for fuck sake, I threw a computer across the office a few years ago because it wouldn't play ball, kept freezing and refused to send a file to the plotter, Tom Cruise wouldn't have done that, he'd have been out of the window with all the required info before my computer hit the floor.

I got a verbal warning and offered anger management sessions, BUT we did get new PCs all round as well.

When someone gets shot and immediately adopts a starfish pose and flies backwards before falling to the floor.

As a Mythbusters episode showed, being hit by a bullet doesn't make you do this, the (fatal) bullet hits you, you fold, like a string puppet whose strings have been cut.

When a car is locked or unlocked by remote fob it always makes a 90s style bleep-bloop noise.

Tyres that squeal on every corner and every surface, including gravel.

Mobile phone being used, other party hangs up... dialling tone.

All space ships ‘fly’ on the same plane, in the same orientation.

We can fire-and-forget missiles at unseen enemy targets today, but in future space you have to dogfight at close range.

In all action films no one looks for a parking space, they pull up right outside the building in the busy city and stop right by the main door with no worries. They then jump out the car and never bother locking the doors.

They shot pig carcasses showing that the velocity of the bullet means no force is felt by the body as the bullet passes through.

Excuse me?

Are you criticising The Doctor?
Shocked

Are you of a generation that remembers the original cybermen who were CLEARLY (even to a terrified 7 year old hellkat) made of cardboard painted silver.

Well it's strange what you'll forgive, with Dr Who. Like the "remake" Cybermen clanking about in their obviously plastic armour. Some things are clever though. I particularly like the plot-device of "visual perception filters" over the sci-fi tradition of invisibility cloaks.

But the more outlandish it is, the better. It all falls flat when they get the really basic stuff wrong.
