So I’ve decided to go get the a1 licence as I just turned 16. I’ve been looking at a few bikes, and yzf r125 and mt 125 has caught my attention. The only problem is that they are a bit pricey, so I’ll bring the CBR into consideration. I’m about 184cm tall and weigh about 75kgs.

Imo the looks of the yzf is just stunning, but I’ve read that the laying position can be a bit uncomfortable. I also like the looks of the mt, and I’ve read that it is more comfy.

So my question is, what bike would you guys recommend, with power, comf, and price into consideration: Honda CBR, Yamaha Mt 125 or YZF R125? (If you have any other suggestions that would be better in the same price range as the listed ones, please tell me)

I’ll be uskng it to school sometimes just for fun (I only live about 1-1,5km from school) but mostly out with my friends, which are all driving mt and ktm duke.

I’m pretty desperate atm, so any replies would be greatly appreciated! Very Happy

Don't you need to be 17 for an A1? At 16 you're only allowed a moped.

That all sounds great, but you won't be doing it on a 125 anytime soon. Do your cbt, get a 50 (restricted to 28mph), then you can ride to school. These friends, bought or stole their mt's and ktm's, or are you about to fall victim to county lines grooming?

Assuming the OP is in Spain (as he/she mentions distances in km, and there are several Buena Vistas), motorcycle age restrictions are somewhat different to the UK;

Google wrote:

AM (Mopeds and vehicles for people with reduced mobility) at 15

A1 (motorbikes up to 125cc) at 16

A2 (motorbikes with a maximum power of 35kW a power-to-weight ratio of under 0.2kW/kg) at 18

A (all motorbikes, at least two years experience is required) at 20

With that in mind, there's probably a case to get a 125 given the OP has a while to wait before they can ride something bigger.

In which case, I'd probably look at a YBR125 unless buying new. It'll be prety much as fast and a lot cheaper. Also less distressing if you drop it.

That said, if I was 16, in Spain and looking for a 125, I'd want a road legal 1980's Ossa for shits and giggles. Make all the senioritas moist and wanton by my wheelie and stoppie skills outside the school gates.

Or a Honda grom for similar reasons.

I've had a couple Cbr125's and they are nice bikes to start on and fairly comfortable.
The whole sports bike look does nothing other than look cool and provides a little bit of wind protection. I'd really recommend looking at other unfaired bikes too like the YBR. They are just as fast and a little more practical with a nicer seating position and ability to easily fit a top box/ strap something to the back without buying a rack.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you can't get the A1 license at 16 if you live in the UK, that's restricted to 17+ year old. What you can do now is get your CBT done and ride a 50cc then switch to a 125 on your next birthday without having to do any further courses/testing.

Personally, I would not bother with getting a 50cc and just wait till you're 17 then do your CBT for a few reasons:
- Insurance is gonna be nuts if you're 16.
- a 50cc only goes up to ~30mph, good luck avoiding dangerous situations if you're riding a glorified push bike that gets overtaken by pensioners popping round to the shop.
- If you put aside like £1700 for when you're 17, you could start saving up even more money for when you want to get a badass A2 bike at 19 like the MT-07 or the KTM Duke 390. I know 19 feels like a long way off when you're 16 but trust me, time goes FAST when you're done with secondary school. Now is the best time to save up cause later you'll have to pay for yearly insurance, petrol, tax, and an additional ~£1000 for the a2 training/mod1/mod2.
- 1 year on a 50cc is worth nothing in terms of progressing further down your license. Only when you jump on a 125cc, it starts to qualify as progression towards your A2.
- 50cc are overpriced for how slow they are lol and often poorly maintained, the demographic that buy 50cc's are impatient chavs that do all sort of dumb shit to their bike and abuse the fuck out of their engine. You'll be hard pressed to find one in good condition. And trust me, you don't wanna spend £3k on a brand new 50cc that you'll get rid of in a year anyways and you won't get anywhere close to your original price on resale.

I agree with you that the yzf r-125 is a stunner - easily the best looking 125 bike but remember you gotta keep in mind that 125 bikes are just a stepping stone to bigger bikes. They're just a means to an end. If your only reason is get the yzf over your other options is because of how good it looks then I wonder, don't you think it's kind of cringe riding a bike that is styled in a way that it looks like it does 180mph but it has a tiny engine and only goes as fast as most 125's?

Sure, people who know nothing about bikes may not know the difference facts are, most guys know if there's a L plate on your bike it's a 125cc at max and they only go up to around 70mph. And some people will say to you "wow that bike looks cool! how fast does it go?", putting you on the spot where you have lie or admit it's basically a bike powered by a washing machine engine.
In your situation, I would just suck it up and get a cheap but good resale value + reliable + okay looking 125 and treat it as a learning fun experience that doesn't make you fucking cry on the inside when you eventually drop it or crash it as a biker noob. Yamaha YBR or Honda CB125F are good choices for this, you gotta be honest, naked YBR's don't look that bad anyways.
Again, I'm sorry if this comes off as overly negative but I think it's good for you to have some opposing opinions so you can reassess what you really want from a bike and make a good decision rather than just purchasing one based on impulse or to impress other people.

Hey! Here's a thing: take the initial poster at their word and just answer the question Wink

When it comes to modern 125s there's not much in it. One might be a teeny-weeny bit faster than another but at the end of the day they're all gimped. Just get something you like the look of that you can afford to trash for a year or two. All your mates have MTs and Dukes? Get a Ninja: bit different to all the rest but still cool when you go to school Smile

Buying brand new? If second-hand is OK, you might find a Rieju RS3 125, which uses the same engine as the YZF-R125 and others.

I always make a point of never recommending what someone thinks they want on the basis they already know about it. May as well go shout it down a well and see which echoes loudest...

Don't get a KTM. Yes they are cool but you want to ride it, not look at it in the corner of the garage while waiting for parts. (generalisation of the marque rather than the model in particular)

All of them will be slow, but a naked bike or dirt bike will feel faster.

If I was doing the 125 thing again it would be a dirt bike, no question. That or a scooter.

If I was looking at a 125 now I would probably go for a MT125. I was looking at one the other day, nice looking bike. They're all about as quick as each other so it's just down to looks and riding position really I guess.

Lots of options now, majority of the 125s were sports bikes or scramblers when I was riding them.
