I said I would never bother spraying again but I have decided to do it while I have time. Ive got a large tub of old acrylic/cellulose metalic paint which looks ok plus plenty of acrylic clear. I do have a compressor and a cheap spray gun.

I do not have primer. Since panels are plastic and paint is plastic, it seems somewhat redundant in my mind. However I know panels are soft plastic and rattle can paint sinks in, when high velocity flys hit it. First panel will be nose cone, so it will get many flys.

Should I bother with primer? Is there a primer that gives a hard, fly resistant layer? What to get?

Im told that water based paints are now as good as 2k, but the good stuff is impossible to get. Any alternatives?

I have heard it said, by one who was in the car business, that misting ABS plastic with acetone, then waiting until it is just about to disappear, but still looks damp, then spraying on with a solvent paint will lead to a good job. Someone here pooh-poohed the idea, I can't remember why, but that's exactly what the car man told me.

Won't work for polypropylene though, I don't imagine that would be possible, easily or otherwise, to paint. If you've got fibreglass, anything should go on it as far as I know.

If you are going to paint ABS, you need to apply a product called "adhesion promoter" before you primer or paint. Google "auto paint adhesion promoter". I have had good success with just adhesion promoter, primer, and rattlecan paint on several bikes I have reconditioned. You'll be surprised what you can achieve with some patience, elbow grease, and 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper, rubbing compound, and polishing compound. Really...professional results are possible. Good luck.
